Box Score 2 CANTON, Ohio -- Notre Dame saw three leads evaporate in game two of a Friday doubleheader against Malone, as the Pioneers swept the Falcons at Thurman Munson Memorial Stadium. (
Game-1 |
Game-2)
The Pioneers (9-13) won by scores of 4-0 and 9-8, with Malone's Jared Messer (complete-game two-hit shutout) and Bob Suitca (walk-off single) performing well in key moments.
The twin losses by Notre Dame (9-13-1) snap the team's three-game win streak which included a momentum-building victory at Youngstown State on Tuesday.
Game One
Malone starter Jared Messer held Notre Dame to just two singles and a walk in a near-flawless performance. The junior right-hander struck out a season-high seven batters in what was a complete game shutout that took just an hour-and-20 minutes to play.
The Pioneers scored a lone unearned run off a pair of hits and an error in the third inning. In the fifth MU strung together a leadoff home run and three singles to plate three more runs off starter
Andrew Hyde.
Hyde went the distance for the Falcons; he fanned seven without issuing a walk. Malone garnered eight hits in the game.
NDC's only two hits came courtesy
Jesse Bartle and
Jesse Carriere, who each had singles.
Game Two
The nightcap also looked like a pitcher's duel -- through three frames anyway. NDC freshman
Zach Gresch and MU junior Alex Haines -- a pair of left-handers -- matched zeroes through the first three innings of play. Notre Dame then plated two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Malone countered with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. That exchange started a race to the finish, a back-and-forth with crooked numbers right through the end of the regulation seven innings.
The Falcons plated a solo run in the fifth; MU countered with three. NDC scored three in the top of the sixth; the Pioneers came right back with three more. Notre Dame got big hits from Bartle (two doubles) and
T.J. Deininger (two-run single) over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Then, with two outs in the top of the seventh and the Falcons trailing 8-6, an
Eric Mathews was mishandled by MU shortstop Joe Goddard and two runs came around to score on the error. That would send the game into the eighth and in that extra frame Pioneers catcher Bob Suita came up with an RBI single, plating Matt Anderson from third base with one out an NDC infield playing in.
Gresch went 3-2/3 innings in the game, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck out three without yielding a walk. An NDC bullpen comprised of
Kevin Bedhun,
Sean Harnish and
Travis Bondy combined to allow seven runs on 11 base hits over 3-2/3 innings.
Bartle finished with three hits in the nightcap and four hits on the afternoon. Over the two contests, Malone outhit Notre Dame, 24-12.
Center fielder Adam Heideman went 5-for-7, with a home run and three RBIs over the two games to lead the Malone offense.
