Second half adjustments lead Falcons to victory

URBANA, Ohio. -- The Notre Dame women's soccer team earned its second win of the 2011 season with a, 2-0, victory over Urbana on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 10) at the Urbana University Stadium. (Box)

Junior forward Lauren Acker (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) tallied both goals – her third and fourth of the season – in the 52nd and 53rd minutes, while sophomore goalkeeper Kristy Kolschetzky (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) registered a career high 10 saves and earned the clean sheet.

After a scoreless opening half that had the same look as when the two teams last locked horns (Oct. 19, 2010), Notre Dame scored twice in a span of 1:16 to break the game open.

“They (Urban) came in with a game plan to frustrate us,” noted Falcons head coach Mike Shiels. “At halftime we made some adjustments and the girls were able to get in behind them and take advantage.”
The first goal from those adjustments came on a rebound in the 52nd minute when Acker tucked home her third consecutive goal. Acker extended the Falcons lead, 2-0, with her second via a cross into the box in the 53rd minute on an assist from, freshman defender Jayonda Pullens (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este). The assist marked Pullens' first collegiate point and assist in her third match.

Kolschetzky was kept very busy throughout the second half. After making just one save in the opening 45 minutes, the Mentor, Ohio, native was forced into nine second half saves to register her second shutout of the season.

Notre Dame travels to Tiffin Tuesday (Sept. 13) at 3 p.m. at Paradisco Athletic Fields.
