URBANA, Ohio -- Thunderstorms swept across the Ohio Valley over the weekend. And while NDC and Urbana evaded the precipitation, there was still plenty of thunder and lightning as hits and runs rained down like April showers Sunday at Blue Knight Field. A day after the first two games of a scheduled four-game series were rained out, the Falcons and Blue Knights combined to score 47 runs in a split. (

Urbana's Steve Froese accounted for runs No. 26 and 27 of that barrage with a two-run walk-off home run to earn a 14-13 game-one victory for the host Blue Knights (17-20). In the nightcap, it was the Falcons (27-16) who emerged victorious in another slugfest, 11-9.
A combined eighteen Falcon and Blue Knight pitchers were used and, by the looks of the box score, abused by the bats of both squads. Over the course of the two games, the NDC and UU offenses accounted for 47 runs, 50 hits and 26 walks, while striking out just 10 times. Pitchers were tagged with eight wild pitches and three hit batsmen in the scorebook and by a slew of extra-base hits on the diamond. The Falcons combined to hit seven home runs and seven doubles on the day.
The two teams were to have played a four-game series in Urbana, but Saturday's doubleheader was wiped out due to inclement weather. Perhaps it was just as well. Both teams may well have run out of pitchers. Or baseballs.
In Sunday's opener, NDC fell behind, 5-1, and then 12-5 before scoring eight unanswered runs in what appeared to be a prolific come-from-behind win. But it was the Blue Knights who would have last licks when they batted in the bottom of the seventh. And Froese and the home nine delivered a stunning 14-13 win in a game that featured five homers (four by NDC), seven doubles and a total of 28 base hits.
Falcon shortstop #Travis Brown# went 3-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs in the opener.
In the second game, NDC went up 4-0 and then 9-3 before nearly coughing up the lead again in the final frame. The Blue Knights batted around in that seventh stanza, plating three runs but leaving the bases loaded when reliever #Sean Harnish# induced a final-out foul pop-up.
NDC batters banged out seven extra-base hits in the nightcap, with first baseman #Benji Jarabeck# doing his part to contribute to the day's offensive fireworks. Jarabeck went 4-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs.
Over the two games, Falcon batters went a combined 13-for-25 with runners in scoring position, and their 24 runs marked their most in a doubleheader since scoring 24 against Point Park (Pa.) nearly two years ago to the day (April 26, 2008).
Eleven Falcon hurlers were banged around for 23 runs (19 earned) on 21 hits and 20 walks (10 each game) in the non-conference meeting between Notre Dame and Urbana.
Travis Brown finished the day with five hits as did Jarabeck. Center fielder #Ryan Weaver# had four hits. Brown, Jarabeck, #Jesse Bartle#, #Eric Johnson#, #Tony Younis# and #Brett Zientarski# all homered in the twin bill. The Falcons have now hit a program-record 30 round-trippers on the season. Younis and Zientarski lead the club, with six apiece.
The NDC bat attack provided another new single-season record on Sunday in Urbana. The Falcons have now scored 294 runs on the season, eclipsing the 277 runs scored by the 2007 team. Through 43 games, the Blue & White are averaging 6.8 runs per contest.
