Six run sixth haunts Falcons in loss to John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons went back and forth with John Carroll over the first five innings of Tuesday afternoon's contest, but the Blue Streaks put the game away with a six-run rally in the sixth inning to come away with an 11-7 victory. (Box)

For the Falcons (19-7, 6-2), the loss was their second in their last three games and for John Carroll (9-6) the victory marked their fifth in their last six games .

The two teams exchanged two-run blows in the third inning. With two on and one out in the top of the frame, #Pat Ross# grounded out to the shortstop, allowing #Jesse Carriere# to score the game's first run. Moments later, #Ryan Weaver# smacked a two-out double into the right-center gap and brought in #Jesse Bartle# to double Notre Dame's lead. Brian Benander cut into NDC's two-run lead just a half inning later when he belted a double down the left field line to score John Skomra, and Dominic Varacallo scored the tying run moments later on Tim O'Brien's sacrifice fly.

Bartle came through for the Falcons with a two-out single to score #Brett Zientarski# in the top of the fourth inning to give them the lead once more, but the Blue Streaks answered quickly with a pair of runs in the home half of the frame to capture their first lead of the contest. NDC entered the fifth inning, down 4-3, when #Tony Younis# blasted his second homerun of the season, a three-run shot that gave the Falcons a 6-4 lead.

Notre Dame's two-run lead stood for an inning and a half, until John Carroll struck for six runs to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. John Hastings smacked a run scoring double to right field off of #Justin Miller#, who then walked Benander with the bases loaded to tie the game at 6-6. Miller was relieved by #Leonard Mora#, who allowed a three-run double to Ryan Pacyga and an RBI single to O'Brien, which capped JCU's big inning.

The two teams combined to use 12 pitchers throughout the contest. Miller (4-2) took the loss for the Falcons, and saw his scoreless innings streak come to an end at 15, after allowing five runs on two hits over two-thirds of an inning. The loss was Miller's first since March 6 against Madonna. #Matthew Kastelic# started the game for Notre Dame and tossed a pair of scoreless innings, allowed just one hit and fanned three batters.

Bartle had a huge day for the Falcons, going 3-for-3 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base. His three hits were a season high, and marked his fourth multi-hit game this season. Weaver also turned in a multi-hit game for the Falcons, going 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored and a stolen base, and saw his average rise to .325 on the season. The homerun from Younis was NDC's eighth this season, and it was their first in their last six games.

Notre Dame will return to American Mideast Conference play on Thursday, April 1, when they head to North Canton, Ohio, to take on Walsh. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
