First place Falcons

Notre Dame takes 3 of 4 from Cedarville to remain in first place

EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons used a doubleheader split on Saturday afternoon at Paul Serra Field to take 3 of 4 games against the Cedarville Yellow Jackets over the weekend series, and are all by themselves in first place in the American Mideast Conference. (Gm-1 | Gm-2)

The Notre Dame (19-5, 6-2) pitching staff pushed its scoreless innings streak to 27 after #Andrew Hyde# tossed a pair of scoreless innings in the opening game of the twin bill. The Falcons took an early lead in the home half of the first inning, when #Pat Ross# scored on a passed ball. Cedarville (15-7, 4-4) answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Nate Wilson tied the game with a run scoring single and Tyler Rost knocked in the next run on an RBI single to give the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 lead.

Notre Dame answered in the next half inning, scoring four times on five hits. #Travis Brown# singled to center field, scoring both #Travis Bondy# and Ross. #Benji Jarabeck# followed with a fielder's choice which brought #Tony Younis# home, and #Brett Zientarski# ripped a single to left field, scoring Brown to cap the inning.

Cedarville did not go quietly, as they plated a trio of runs in the fifth inning to tie the game at 5-5. In the home half of the fifth inning, Jarabeck came through with a big two-out single to left field. Younis collided with Cedarville catcher David Convertini at home plate on the play, and knocked the ball out of his glove as he scored the eventual game winning run in Notre Dame's 6-5 victory.

The Falcons were held to just a run on three hits in the series finale, as the Yellow Jackets avoided the four-game sweep, with a 6-1 victory. Cedarville scored two runs in the top of the first inning to snag the early edge, and the Falcons cut into that lead in the home half of the third on #Ryan Weaver#'s run scoring single. The Yellow Jackets then added two runs in the sixth inning, and two more insurance runs in the seventh to pull away.

Bondy (2-0) earned the victory for the Falcons in game one. The Windsor, Ont., native held Cedarville scoreless over an inning of relief, while #Simon Davis# slammed the door on the Yellow Jackets, tossing a scoreless seventh inning, to get his first save of the season. Mike Szabo (1-1) allowed a pair of runs on three hits over an inning and a third in the second game, and was tagged with the loss.

Notre Dame's 6-5 victory in the first contest pushed their record to 8-0 in one run games this season. They've won three of their last four games by a run. Ross went 1-for-6 on the afternoon, but scored twice and brought his on base percentage up to .514 on the season. Brown went 2-for-6 during the double dip and knocked in a pair of runs, and saw his average rise to .366.

The Falcons are back in action on Tuesday, March 30, when they lock horns with John Carroll. The first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
