Extra, extra!

Falcons outlast Mount Union in 15 innings

EUCLID, Ohio -- The Notre Dame Falcons erased an early 4-0 deficit on Wednesday evening at Paul Serra Field, and came from behind to win their fourth game in a row, defeating the Purple Raiders, 6-5, in 15 innings. (Box)

#Ryan Weaver# was the hero for the Falcons (16-5), bringing the four-hour and 36-minute game to an end with a walk-off single in the bottom of the 15th inning to score #Brad Morrison#. Morrison started the inning with a base hit, and then advanced to second and third on singles from #Jesse Carriere# and #Pat Ross# before scoring on Weaver's game winner.

Notre Dame spotted the Purple Raiders a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Mount Union scored four times on just three hits in the opening frame, and took advantage of two Notre Dame errors to take the early lead.

The Falcons were down 5-1, when #Brett Zientarski#'s sixth inning double off the wall in center field scored #Travis Brown#. Notre Dame scored twice in the eighth inning to close the gap. Three consecutive singles from Zientarski, #Eric Johnson# and #Jesse Bartle# loaded the bases with nobody out. #Benji Jarabeck# reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Zientarski to score, and Carriere's sacrifice fly brought Johnson home moments later to make it a one-run game.

Weaver was hit by a pitch with one out in the ninth inning, and moved to third base on #Tony Younis#'s single to right center field. Weaver then scored the game tying run just moments later on Brown's groundout to force extra innings.

The two teams combined to use 12 pitchers. Notre Dame was able to score on five of Mount Union's six hurlers, while the combination of #Brent Edmonds#, #Eric Mathews#, #Travis Bondy# and #Simon Davis# held the Purple Raiders scoreless over the last 11 innings of the contest. Davis (3-0) earned the victory after tossing three scoreless innings of one-hit relief.

Younis and Carriere paced the Falcons offensively with three hits apiece, while Ross, Zientarski and Bartle chipped in with two hits. Ross brought his average up to .429 on the season, and leads the Falcons with 33 hits over 21 games. The Notre Dame offense tallied 16 hits on the evening, giving them 62 hits over their last four games.

Notre Dame will continue their five game home stand on Friday, March 26, with a doubleheader against the Cedarville Yellow Jackets. The first pitch in game one is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
