Falcons take two from Bethel, off to a 7-2 start

AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Notre Dame swept a pair of games from Bethel (Ind.) on Tuesday afternoon in NDC's third day of play at the Central Florida Invitational.

Freshman right-hander #Tyler DeCrapio# tossed a complete-game three-hitter as the Falcons (7-2) beat the Pilots, 6-1, in the opener, and NDC ripped 11 hits in winning the nightcap, 12-3. #Benji Jarabeck# led the Falcon bats on the afternoon. The junior first baseman/designated hitter went 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles.

In the opener, a Jarabeck two-out double plated leadoff batter #Pat Ross# to stake DeCrapio to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. For his part, DeCrapio cruised, taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning. The Erie, Pa., native had one-two-three frames in the first, third and fifth innings and kept Pilot batters off balance throughout. DeCrapio didn't allow a hit until the Pilots leadoff hitter knocked a single to center with two down in the top of the sixth.

That first hit was followed by a double and a passed ball, accounting for Bethel's lone run.

For the game, DeCrapio allowed just one unearned run on three hits. He walked two and struck out four while inducing 11 ground-ball outs.

In the second game, Notre Dame scored three times in the first and twice in the second and found themselves up, 5-3, through three innings. Right-hander #Mike Szabo# started the game for the Falcons. He was touched up a bit early but then settled down to maintain the NDC lead. Szabo left the game in the fifth, having retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced.

NDC got a solo run in the fifth and then exploded for five runs in the sixth. Theor 12 runs scored for the game mark a season-high.

Pat Ross reached base four times in the game, with two singles and two walks. Benji Jarabeck went 2-for-3. Freshman #Travis Bondy# went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple.

NDC is slated to be off on Wednesday and return to action with a doubleheader against Concordia (Mich.) on Thursday, March 4.
