NDC goes the distance, beats Cedarville, 3-0

CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- Notre Dame topped the Lady Jackets of Cedarville University, 3-0, on Friday night. With the victory on the road, Notre Dame has now won four straight matches and seven of their last eight. improved their record to 9-7, and 3-1 for road games this season.  (Box)

The match at the Callan Athletic Center marked the season opener for both the Blue & White and the Lady Jackets (5-11). With the win in straight sets (26-24, 24-21, 31-29) Notre Dame runs their season record to 9-7. NDC is now 3-1 in four road tilts.

The first set of the night in Cedarville started off close with Notre Dame defeating Cedarville, 26-24, taking the contest into extra points. The third set also required a little extra effort - the Falcons needed six extra points before finally closing out the Lady Jackets, 31-29. Notre Dame hit .179, .361 and .308 in the three sets, respectively. For the three-set match, NDC out-hit Cedarville, .289-.261.

A 3-0 win for the Falcons was not the only part of the competition that made Notre Dame's spirits fly. Junior #Katie Barbis# returned to the court and contributed 13 kills for her team after being out with an injury for the last matches.

Freshman #Brianne Schmansky# added 11 kills, senior #Jessica Suvak# swatted eight, and senior setter #Kate Verhoff# supplied the Falcons with 36 assists.

The Falcons had 67 digs in the match, to Cedarville's 40; Barbis led the way for the Blue & White with 16 digs. NDC also had 16 blocks on the night, with #Casey Merrill# garnering a match-high six.

Emily Shade led the host Lady Jackets on the evening - she had 17 kills against just one hitting error.

The Falcons' next match will be Tuesday, Sept. 22, when their 2009 AMC campaign continues against the Cavaliers of Walsh University. 


NOTES FROM THE NEST…

CEASE FIRE: Sophomore #Kari Kincannon# missed Friday's match. The 2008 All-AMC Freshman performer has not played since Sept. 1. Kincannon led the Falcons last year with 312 kills.

PLAYING WITH MATCHES: With Friday's 3-0 shutout, Notre Dame is now 12-2 over their last 14 sets. The Falcons are now 4-2 in three-set matches this season.
