Notre Dame takes one of two in Oberlin

Three-match winning streak snapped in opener

OBERLIN, Ohio -- Notre Dame split a pair of matches at Oberlin College Friday. NDC lost to Carnegie Mellon, 3-2, and then defeated Oberlin, 3-1.

Notre Dame (6-7) was led by #Jessica Suvak# and #Jessica Parks#, who each had 22 kills on the evening.

In the opening match, Carnegie Mellon topped the Falcons by scores of 24-26, 25-23, 25-23, 18-25, and 15-8. Notre Dame actually outscored the Tartans, 105-103, in the hard-fought five-set affair.

In the match against the host Yeowomen, NDC prevailed, 25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16.

Besides Parks and Suvak, NDC players that stuffed the stat sheet included #Mandy Bastian# (35 digs), #Cristin Brown# (43 digs) and #Kate Verhoff# (79 assists). Parks added five service aces for the Falcons who were without the services of two of their starters, #Katie Barbis# (tonsillitis) and #Kari Kincannon# (foot).

Notre Dame will close out their weekend of play in Wooster, Ohio, on Saturday, when they take on Case Western Reserve (1 p.m.) and Westminster-Pa. (3 p.m.) in a tri-match hosted by the College of Wooster. 


NOTES FROM THE NEST…

(NOT) TAKING THE FIFTH: With NDC's 3-2 loss in the match against Carnegie Mellon, the Falcons have already played in five matches that have gone the distance this season. Notre Dame is 1-4 in those five. A year ago (2008), Notre Dame played in five matches all season that went the distance; they were also 1-4 in those matches. 

SERIES NOTES: Since 1998, Notre Dame is now 1-2 against Carnegie Mellon and 5-3 against Oberlin. The Falcons have defeated Oberlin in five straight. 

STUCK IN NEUTRAL: With NDC's 3-2 loss to CMU in Friday's first match, the Falcons' record in neutral site matches this season fell to 2-6. Notre Dame is 2-0 in home matches and 2-1 in road contests. … A year ago after 13 matches, NDC was 9-4. In 2007, the Falcons were 6-7.
