NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- Notre Dame was swept by the Cavaliers of Walsh University in an American Mideast Conference doubleheader on Wednesday. Walsh won the games,
15-5 and
4-3.
With the twin losses Notre Dame (6-26, 3-15 AMC) has now lost 12 of their last 13. Senior left fielder #Jack Sito# went 3-for-6 with a double and a home run to lead the Falcons on the day.
In the opener, Sito and Danny Gesick each hit home runs, but Walsh (13-19, 7-11) ripped NDC pitching for 15 runs on 19 base hits in 5-2/3 innings to earn a run-rule victory. Freshman left-hander #Chris Willoughby# started for the Falcons; he went four innings and gave up six runs. He was lifted for #Trevor Casey#, who gave way to #Jon Harnish#. NDC's three pitchers combined to walk five, while striking out just one.
Four Cavalier batters tallied three or more hits in the game, led by center fielder Tyler Maag, who torched Falcon pitching to go 5-for-5 with six RBIs. The opener was tied, 2-2, after three before WU scored four in the fourth, three in the fifth and six in the sixth.
For Walsh, freshman Billy Gura pitched a complete game to earn his third win of the season. The right-hander struck out five without issuing a walk.
In the nightcap, freshman right-hander #Alex Walke# toed the rubber for NDC, going against Walsh's Steve Weirich. Both were solid early, with each tossing three scoreless frames to start the game.
NDC plated a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, on RBIs by #Mike Wilsey# and #Miguel Rodriguez#. But Walke ran into trouble in the bottom of the inning, giving up back-to-back home runs to start the inning and then a third run on a sacrifice fly.
Weirich set the Falcons down in order in both the fifth and sixth. Notre Dame got to him four singles in the seventh, plating one run. But the Cavalier right-hander picked up two outs with the bases loaded in the Falcons' last at-bat to close out the one-run victory. For the game, Weirich fanned eight, and like his teammate Gura in game one, did not walk a batter.
Walke went the route for NDC. He struck out seven while walking one. The Cavaliers managed seven base hits off the newcomer from Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
Notre Dame's AMC slate continues this weekend, when the Falcons host the Bears of Shawnee State University. Doubleheaders are scheduled for Friday, April 10 (3 p.m.) and Saturday, April 11 (1 p.m.).
