CEDARVILLE, Ohio -- Notre Dame split with Cedarville in American Mideast Conference action on Friday. The Falcons earned a
7-2 victory in the opener of the twin bill before falling,
9-4, in the nightcap.
Notre Dame's win in game one snapped a 12-game losing streak. The doubleheader at Yellow Jacket Field marked the first two games of a four-game series between the two AMC foes. All four games are in Cedarville; the series continues Saturday, March 21, at 1 p.m.
Offensively, Notre Dame (3-13, 1-5) was led by sophomore catcher #Miguel Rodriguez#, who went 3-for-6 with a pair of walks and three RBIs. #Jack Sito# went 3-for-8 with a triple and two RBIs, and #Eric Pelot# went 3-for-8 with three doubles and three RBIs.
Game 1
In the first game, NDC scored a solo run in the top of the first on an RBI triple by Sito. Cedarville (12-9, 3-3) countered with a run in the bottom of the first off Falcon starter #Mick Robinson#. Both Robinson and CU starter Matthew Willett then hung zeroes in the second through the fifth.
In the sixth inning, Notre Dame exploded for six runs, with Rodriguez, #Kevin Butler# and Pelot each collecting two RBIs. Robinson then got out of the Yellow Jacket sixth with a double play. The senior left-hander let two aboard in the bottom of the seventh before junior right-hander #Sunny Dhaliwal# came on to record the final three outs of the game. Robinson exited the game having allowed just two hits in 13 RBI situations for Cedarville. He allowed six hits (five singles and a double) and six walks in his six frames. The Canal Winchester, Ohio, native also struck out a personal season-high eight.
Game 2
In the nightcap, Cedarville tallied four runs in the home half of the first and then added another four over the second, third and fourth innings. The Falcons were down, 8-0, when they finally scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, on RBI hits by Pelot and Sito. Cu scored one in the fifth, and NDC added solo runs in the sixth and seventh to close out the scoring at 9-4.
Sito started and went 2-2/3 innings for the Falcons. He allowed seven hits (six singles) and three walks. The 6-foot-2 right-hander yielded six earned runs while striking out a pair.
Junior left-hander Josh Sandlin started for Cedarville; he allowed three earned runs in six innings. Junior right-hander Luke Freshwater pitched the seventh, giving up two hits and a run.
Pelot led the NDC offense in the second game, with two doubles in four plate appearances. He now has five doubles on the season and 27 in his NDC career.
Rodriguez reached base in all four of his plate appearances (two hits, two walks) in the game, raising his on-base percentage for the season to .500.
Notre Dame's victory in game one snapped a program-worst 12-game losing streak. NDC's last win prior to Friday was on March 2 against Indiana Wesleyan.
