The Notre Dame College softball program was instituted in 1989, becoming the fourth sport in the history of the institution. In 2009, the Falcons swept the American Mideast Conference regular season title and tournament title. That year, they came one win shy of the Final Four in the NAIA Tournament. NDC won three consecutive AMC Tournament titles, and bids to the NAIA Tournament, between 2009 and 2011.

The Falcons earned NCAA Division II membership prior to the 2013 season.  After playing the 2013 season as an independent program, they joined the Mountain East Conference. Since joining the MEC in 2014, the program has earned a spot in the conference tournament every season. In 2015, the Falcons won six consecutive conference tournament games and took home the MEC Tournament Title, after losing the opening contest.
