The Notre Dame College women's soccer program was instituted in 1995. Despite an initial struggle, the Falcons have steadily improved under head coach Mike Shiels after his hire in 2003. Shiels led Notre Dame to a double-digit win total for the first time in program history in 2006 when the team earned its first postseason bid. Since that season the Falcons have posted a winning record in 14 out of 17 seasons.
Notre Dame earned provisional NCAA Division II membership on July 8, 2011, changing their affiliation after 10 highly successful years in the NAIA. NDC competed as an independent team in 2011, before joining the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) in 2012, and became a charter member of the Mountain East Conference in 2013. In their first season in the MEC, the Falcons captured the Regular Season Title. NDC won the MEC Tournament in 2014, with a 1-0 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan in the title match, punching their first ticket to the NCAA National Tournament. In 2018, Notre Dame won the first MEC North Division title after the conference switched to a two-division system.
The Falcons have made the NCAA Division II Tournament three times, in 2014, 2016 and 2017. NDC made the NCAA Tournament in 2014 and 2016 after winning the MEC tournament and earned its first at-large bid in 2017. In the opening round of the 2017 tournament, Notre Dame earned its first NCAA Tournament win with a 2-1 victory against Kutztown. The 2020 season was played in the spring of 2021 due to COVID-19 and in the MEC Tournament, NDC upset No. 15 ranked Frostburg State and No. 5 Concord to capture their third tournament title. In the final national poll that season, the Falcons were No. 12, the highest ranking in program history.
The NDC women's soccer program has generated nine All-Americans, three Academic All-Americans, 37 All-Region honors, eight Academic All-Region selections, 84 All-MEC nominees, 18 MEC All-Tournament representatives, 13 All-Ohio awards and six Academic All-Ohioans.
