Wrestling prepares for Regionals in West Liberty

This Week: Notre Dame College will travel to West Liberty University for the Super Region III Tournament, on March 2. The action begins at 10 a.m. NDC's wrestlers will attempt to finish in the top three of their weight bracket in order to qualify for the NCAA Division II National Tournament, in Kansas on March 15-16.

Coaches Corner: Jordon Tague is in his second season leading NDC. Colt Sponseller leads Ashland and Sam Gardner is on the side of the mat for Bluefield State. At Davenport, Scott Lucas is leading the Panthers and Andrew Colborn is the head coach of Davis & Elkins. The head coach of Findlay is Shawn Nelson, while Dylan Cottrell is at Glenville State and Joey Simcoe will be leading the charge at Grand Valley State. The head coach of Lake Erie is Boomer Fechko, while Antonio Guerra leads Tiffin and Danny Irwin will lead West Liberty. Shane Brown is at Wheeling.

Rankings: In the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association top 25 Division II poll, West Liberty is No. 7, Lake Erie ranks No. 10, Ashland is No. 14, Grand Valley State ranks tied for No. 17, Tiffin is ranked No. 20 and Glenville State is No. 21.
 
In the National Individual Rankings, Nico Taddy is fifth at 149 lbs. for West Liberty, while Ty McGeary is the top ranked wrestler at 184 and Francesco Borsellino is second at 285.
 
From Lake Erie, Christian Small is in the top spot at 149, Jack Haskin is No. 2 at 157, Corey Gamet is ranked 10th at 141 and James Penfold has been placed 11th at 174.
 
Ashland's Daniel Beemer ranks second at 184, Drew Wiechers is fifth at 157, Nate Barrett is the 10th-best wrestler at 174 and Walker Uhl was placed 12th at 197.
 
Grand Valley State's Chris Donathan ranks third at 149, Josh Kenny is sixth at 174 and, at 197, Wyatt Miller is the ninth-best wrestler.
 
Tiffin's Zack Donathan is the top wrestler at 141, Anthony Aniciete is 12th at 125 and Casey Barnett is ranked 11th at 157.
 
Gavin Quiocho is third in the country at 133, for Glenville State. Guy DeLeonardis is No. 6 at 157.
 
Noting the Falcons: In addition to facing top competition at the open meets this season, Notre Dame also faced Tiffin, Lake Erie, Findlay, Grand Valley State, West Liberty and Ashland in dual meets.
 
At the Regional Duals, Ethan Aguiniga won both of his matchups at 165 lbs. against Jacob Pail (Tiffin) and Thomas Potter (Lake Erie). La'Ron Parks won at 285, against Findlay's Giulian Bodiu.
 
NDC upset No. 16 Grand Valley State, 28-24. Jake Arnold (125), Parker Moore (149), Matthew Kaufmann (157), Alec Hall (174) and Parks (285) all won their bouts in that one.
 
Marvelous Rutledge (197) defeated West Liberty's Luke Justice by tech fall and then Parks took down WLU's Jamie Kilmer by decision in that dual meet.
 
At the Mountain East Conference Championships, Kaufmann (157) and Parks (285) both took second place in their weight class. Alec Hall (174) grabbed third place, while Parker Moore (149) and Kyle Richards (197) took fourth.
 
Parks is currently ranked No. 18 in The Open Mat Division II rankings.
