This Week: Notre Dame College men's basketball will play a second consecutive home game when Concord University travels to South Euclid for a matchup on Feb. 7, with a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. NDC's next travel destination will be Glenville State University, on Feb. 10, with a 3 p.m. start time.
Records: Notre Dame went 1-1 last week and now holds a record of 10-9, overall, while going 5-8 against Mountain East Conference competition. Concord has won four consecutive games and is now 14-4, with a 9-4 conference mark, sitting in fourth place in the MEC standings. Glenville State also went 1-1 last week and enters the week with a 10-10 record, going 6-7 in MEC play.
Coaches Corner: Mark Richmond is in year five with the Falcons and has a coaching record of 59-65 (44-51 MEC). Todd May has been at Concord for eight seasons and he has a record of 112-100, going 81-82 against the MEC. Bob Bolen is in his first season on the sideline in Glenville, W.Va.
Rankings: In the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II top 25 poll, Concord is receiving one vote. The Mountain Lions are also tied for seventh in the Atlantic Region of the Division II College Sports Communicators poll.
Series History: Notre Dame and Concord have gone 11-11 against each other since the first meeting in 2013. Over the last six matchups, it has been just as even with NDC winning three and CU winning three. However, the last time Concord won a game in South Euclid was Feb. 18, 2017, as Notre Dame has won the last six home games versus the Mountain Lions. Earlier this season, on Dec. 12, Concord defeated NDC, 93-83, in overtime. Notre Dame holds a record of 11-10 versus Glenville State since the 2013-14 campaign. On Nov. 29, 2023, Glenville snuck past NDC, 88-87 in overtime, which snapped a three-game winning streak that NDC had against the Pioneers. The Falcons and GSU have gone to overtime three times in the series history.
Noting the Falcons: Last week, Notre Dame snuck past West Virginia Wesleyan, 84-83, in overtime and, over the weekend, the Falcons fell to Davis & Elkins by a score of 93-80.
Devin Haid had a good week, scoring 21 points against WVWC and 20 versus Davis & Elkins. Against Wesleyan, he shot 7-for-9 from the field before making a season-high 10 shots against D&E. He and
RJ Ogom were the only Falcons to score in double-digits against Davis & Elkins.
Devin Haid has moved into the top ten in the MEC in scoring, with 14.2 points per game.
Andre Harris ranks 20th in the MEC by averaging 12.2 points. Harris is also sixth in the league with 6.5 rebounds per contest.
RJ Ogom leads the MEC by shooting 89.1-percent from the free throw line while Haid is sixth, shooting 82.6-percent at the line. Haid also ranks top-5 in field goal percentage at 48.5-percent. He is eighth in blocked shots per game (1) and 10th in steals per contest (1.4).
As a team, NDC ranks sixth in the MEC in points per game (82.5) and sixth in field goal percentage (45.1-percent). The Falcons make 8.9 three-pointers per contest, which is fourth highest in the MEC. Notre Dame is also top five in both offensive rebounds per game, bringing down 12.4, on average, and assist-to-turnover ratio, at 1.04. The Falcons are third in blocked shots (4.63), third in assists (15.32) and fourth in steals (7.84).
Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord is one win away from matching its win total from last season (15). The last time the Mountain Lions won more than 15 games in a season was 2018-19, when CU posted 20 victories.
Last week, CU upset Fairmont State, 69-68, after Kollin Tolbert hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left. He had 24 points in that game. Concord then took care of business against Frostburg State, 84-74, on Saturday. The Mountain Lions beat Bluefield State by a score of 82-72, on Monday night. Four players scored in double-digits in that game, including a 10-point, 10-rebound game by Rene Diop.
Kollin Tolbert is 11th in the MEC rankings with an average of 13.9 points per game. Concord has three players in the top-12 in rebounds per game, as Tolbert grabs 6.8, Rene Diop pulls down 5.9 per game and JJ Harper tallies 5.6. At the free throw line, Tolbert is seventh in the conference with a 80.9 free throw percentage. Diop leads the conference with 2.2 blocked shots per game and Harper is fourth, with 1.3.
The Mountain Lions are strong on the defensive side, ranking fourth in the MEC by allowing 75.3 points per game. Their opponents shoot 40.3-percent from the field and 32.3-percent from three, which ranks in the top three in both categories. CU shoots free throws at 75.4-percent, second-best in the conference. They also rebound the ball very well, leading the league with 44.9 rebounds per game, 32.7 defensive rebounds per game and a rebounding margin of seven. Concord is at the top of the MEC with 5.06 blocks.
In the national rankings, Concord leads Division II in rebounds per game and defensive rebounds per game. They are 8th blocks per game, 11th in rebounding margin per game (plus-7) and 14th in opponents field goal percentage. Individually, Rene Diop is 10th in the country in blocks per game (2.24) and 16th in total blocks (38).
Noting the Pioneers: Glenville State is going through a tough stretch of the schedule right now, losing four of its last five games. Last week, the Pioneers put a three-game losing streak to bed by beating Frostburg State, 80-70. GSU held a 40-26 lead at halftime, while holding FSU to 27-percent shooting from the field in the first half. Devin Collins led GSU with 16 points. The Pioneers then came out of the gate strong against Fairmont State, last Saturday, taking a 49-41 lead into the halftime break by making eight threes and shooting 54-percent from the field. However, Fairmont outscored the Pioneers 51-33 in the second half for a 92-82 comeback victory.
Jordan Smith leads the Pioneers, and ranks 13th in the conference, with 13.7 points per game, while Devin Collins grabs 5.8 boards per game, ranking 11th in the MEC. Dominiq Penn is third in the three-point percentage (41.4-percent) and three pointers made per game (2.6). Smith and Collins both make an average of 2.2 threes per contest. Smith ranks third in the conference with 4.5 assists per game and is fifth in steals, with 1.7. Remy Lemovou blocks 1.1 shots each night, ranking seventh.
GSU ranks fourth in the MEC by scoring 84 points per game and ranks second with 10.3 made three-pointers per game. The Pioneers rank in the top three of the conference with 41.7 rebounds per game, 13.2 offensive rebounds per game and 28.5 defensive rebounds per game. GSU ranks fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio, at 1.05.
The Pioneers are eighth in the country in rebounds per game, 13th in defensive rebounds per game, 14th in bench points per game (36.3) and 19th in three pointers made per night.
