Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Falcons grab an overtime win for the first time this season

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – In a low-scoring contest, on Wednesday evening, Notre Dame College closed the door with a Devin Haid 3-pointer, late in the overtime period, to grab an 84-83 road win over West Virginia Wesleyan College. And despite taking the second fewest amount of shots of any game this season (59), NDC posted its fourth-highest field goal percentage of the campaign, at 52.5-percent.

Notre Dame fell behind very early in the contest, but it was not because of missed shots, as the Falcons turned the ball over several times in the opening six minutes. West Virginia Wesleyan took advantage of the early mistakes and grabbed a nine-point lead (13-4), with 13:51 remaining in the first half.

NDC then began to settle in and sophomore Devin Haid would start the comeback by getting to the basket. Junior Jamarr Talbert Jr. passed the ball to Haid for a layup on the offensive end and then Haid tipped a Wesleyan pass over to Talbert, on the defensive end, leading to another drive and score by Haid.

Haid had seven first half points. He finished the game with a team-leading 20 points, on 7-of-9 shooting from the field, and four assists, in 22 minutes off the bench.

As was the case last Saturday, when Notre Dame knocked down 16 3-pointers in a win, the long ball began to change the momentum in the first half of Wednesday's game. Talbert, Haid and senior Trent Williams hit back-to-back-to-back triples to give NDC a 19-16 lead.

West Virginia Wesleyan's shooting went cold and the Falcons took advantage. Harris and Talbert both made layups and then sophomore Jevontae Jones dunked to make the score 25-18, in favor of NDC.

With 5:30 on the clock, Notre Dame moved the ball down the floor, using only one dribble in the front court before Haid lobbed a pass to Jones for another dunk. Jones then blocked a Bobcat shot and freshman Robbie Cass knocked down a three-pointer on the other end. The 26-7 run by NDC gave the Falcons a ten-point (30-20) advantage, with 4:46 on the clock.

The Bobcats did have a response, and cut the NDC lead to four points. Notre Dame came right back with a 10-3 run, which included back-to-back threes by Cass and Williams. Harris blocked a WVWC shot, which led to a fastbreak dunk by junior Gbolahan Adio and Notre Dame led, 40-29, with 1:43 to go before halftime.

At the intermission, the Falcons held a 42-35 lead. Along with Haid's seven first half points, Harris, Williams and Cass each added six.

Early in the second half, the Falcons looked like they were going to build a comfortable lead for the final 20 minutes. A three pointer by junior Joshua Dames gave NDC a 51-40 lead. After a technical foul was called on W.Va. Wesleyan, Williams hit two free throws and then a jumper on one possession to put NDC in front by 13, 55-42, with 16:06 remaining in the contest.

The Falcons led by double-digits as late as the 14:05-mark, before the Bobcats began to make their comeback charge. W.Va. Wesleyan took its first lead of the second half with 5:40 remaining, at 65-64. The last six minutes featured four lead changes and five ties. At the end of regulation, the two teams were knotted up at 76.

With the game tied at 78, in overtime, Harris stole the ball and was fouled. He would make one of two free throws during that trip and then would be fouled on the next possession and would make both. The Bobcats did not go away and four free throw makes later, the home team took an 82-81 lead, with less than two minutes remaining.

The eventual game-winner was hit by Haid. After a missed NDC shot went out of bounds and was last touched by WVWC, Harris caught the inbound pass and swung the ball to his right, where Haid was standing open. His three pointer would give the Falcons an 84-82 lead, with 1:23 remaining. That would be all NDC needed.

Wesleyan's Alex Mirhosseini was fouled with one second left and stepped up to the line, shooting two free throws. He made the first but missed the second.

Harris ended with 15 points, on 6-of-11 shooting from the field, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Williams added 12 points. Dames had seven points and a season-high three blocks.

Notre Dame will play at home for the first time in two weeks when they battle Davis & Elkins College, on Feb. 3. Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
