SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On Friday evening, Notre Dame College went up against Gannon University in the Murphy Gymnasium. Following a slow start, NDC was able to grab a few victories, late in dual. However, Gannon came away with a 39-9 victory.
Gannon, a team that was receiving votes in the national poll, jumped out to a large lead through the first half of the dual meet.
At 165 lbs., Notre Dame put its first points on the scoreboard as
Ethan Aguiniga won by decision. The junior got off to a great start with a takedown, less than a minute into the first period. One minute later, he pushed the lead to five (6-1) with a second takedown of Gannon's Caleb Butterfield. Aguiniga would hold on for a 6-5 victory to give the Falcons three team points.
The final two matchups provided plenty of entertainment as both
Marvelous Rutledge (197) and
La'Ron Parks (285) both won their matches by decision.
Rutledge was trailing Anthony Glessner, 2-0, late in the second period, before getting low and dropping the Golden Knights' wrestler on his back for a takedown. And with less than 20 seconds to go in the third period, Rutledge quickly took his opponent to the mat, again, breaking a 3-3 tie and securing the 6-3 win.
Parks and Gannon's Matt Long had already locked horns twice this season, prior to Friday's bout. This one did not disappoint as the score was tied at one, with a pair of escapes, throughout the first three periods. In the first sudden victory period, Parks took Long down near the edge of the mat, and was awarded three points for the win. The Falcons' grappler now leads the head-to-head matchup, 2-1.
The Falcons head to Tiffin University for the Regional Duals, on Jan. 13.
