WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – On Saturday, Notre Dame College wrestling competed against the rest of the Mountain East Conference. At 157 lbs.,
Matthew Kaufmann took second place, while
La'Ron Parks grabbed second at heavyweight.
Alec Hall won his third-place match at 174. As a team, NDC took fifth place at the MEC Championships, with 65 points.
Parks entered the day as the second seed in his bracket. After a bye in the quarterfinals, he faced Glenville State's Gavin Shamblin in the semifinal match, which was tied at one as the third period ended. In sudden victory, Parks got Shamblin off balance, grabbed his leg and was given three points and the win with a takedown. In the championship matchup, he faced the top seed Francesco Borsellino, from the host West Liberty. Parks attacked right away and gained three points with a takedown and was going for the pin before Borsellino working free. Tied at three in the third period, the Hilltoppers' wrestler pinned Parks. The NDC junior took All-MEC Second Team honors.
Kaufmann was dominant early in the day in the 157 lbs. weight bracket. Against West Liberty's AJ Nettey, the NDC senior went ahead 6-1 in the first minute of the match. He would finish off the quarterfinal victory with a tech fall, 18-3, as he nearly pinned Nettey near the end of the first period. He then faced Frostburg's Mason Buckler in the semifinals. Neither wrestler had put a point on the scoreboard as the clock ticked under 10 seconds in the third period. Kaufmann picked Buckler up and put him down with his shoulders on the mat, getting the pin as time expired. In the first-place match, Glenville State's Guy DeLeonardis got out to a big lead and would win by tech fall. Kaufmann grabbed an All-MEC Second Team award.
Alec Hall, who already led 3-1 in the quarterfinals, moved quickly past Frostburg State's Duncan Kammar with a pin in the first period. After losing by decision to West Liberty's Christian Chavez in the semifinals, Hall bounced back and won in the consolation semifinals with a strong 8-1 decision. He carried that momentum into the third-place match. Down 3-1 in the first period, Hall took Fairmont State's Evan Thompson down for three points and the lead. The match was tied at six, late in the second period, before Hall spun Thompson around and put him on his back for a pin. Hall earned MEC Honorable Mention.
Parker Moore wasted no time getting ahead of Fairmont State's Trace Ragland, 6-1, in the first period of the quarterfinal round and then won by a score of 7-2. He lost to Glenville State's Ethan Hardy, before moving past D&E's Corbin Saul in the consolation semifinals, via medical forfeit. In the 149 lbs. third-place match, he lost to Fairmont State's Gage Heilbrun by decision to take fourth.
Kyle Richards had two pins on the day. About two minutes into the quarterfinal matchup, he put William Applegarth on the mat for a takedown. After increasing his lead to 11-0, Richards finished the match with a pin to advance. After losing in the semifinals, Richards went up against Davis & Elkins' Joshua Sanders. Sanders took a 3-0 lead, but the Falcons' grappler turned things around and had four points with a near fall by the end of the first period. Later in the match, Richards would take the win in the consolation semifinals with another pin. In the third-place match, Richards led Fairmont State's Dwayne Johnson, 1-0, but Johnson would get a third period pin and Richards took fourth place.
Parker Moore, 149 lbs. – Defeated Trace Ragland (Fairmont State) by decision (7-2) in quarterfinals… Lost to Ethan Hardy (Glenville State) by fall (1:49) in semifinals… Defeated Corbin Saul (Davis & Elkins) by medical forfeit in consolation semifinals… Lost to Gage Heilbrun (Frostburg State) by decision (7-0) in the third-place match.
