Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

NDC knocks down season-high 16 threes in win over Salem

SALEM, W.Va. – After trailing by two at halftime, Notre Dame College made nine 3-pointers in the second half and outscored Salem University by 11 to win the game, 86-77. Three Falcons knocked down at least four shots from three-point range in the game.

Notre Dame began the day with a technical free throw after the shot clocks malfunctioned, leading to a delay. Junior Joshua Dames hit the shot and NDC led, 1-0.

Once the game began, both teams were connecting from three-point range. NDC and Salem combined for 10 threes in the first 10 minutes of the contest.

Senior Trent Williams hit the first triple of the game to knot the score up at four, but then Salem put together an 11-3 run, which included three consecutive threes. The Tigers led, 15-7, with 16:26 on the first half clock.

Freshman Robbie Cass had a major impact on the game, especially in the first half. He sent the ball over to freshman Gio Moore, who knocked down his first collegiate three. That started a 12-0 run and a streak of four consecutive made 3-pointers by Notre Dame.

Cass then made back-to-back threes of his own, before assisting on a long-range basket by junior Jamarr Talbert Jr. With 13:07 on the clock, NDC led Salem by a score of 19-15.

Salem used another run to catch the Falcons and take the lead. Between the 10:40-mark and the 9:19-mark in the first half, the game had four lead changes. But, when SU missed three shots in-a-row NDC took advantage. Junior Andre Harris got to the basket for a fastbreak layup, he passed the ball to Williams for a three on the next possession and then ended the 7-0 run with another driving layup.

Notre Dame would hold that lead until the 2:38 mark, pushing the advantage to as many as eight points. However, Salem caught up to NDC, again, and scored the final four points of the half to take a 41-39 lead into the break.

The Falcons made two more 3-pointers than Salem did in the first half, but the Tigers shot 52-percent from the field, while NDC shot just 36-percent.

NDC found success in the second half, as they went deeper down the bench. Ten players on the NDC side saw action in at least eight minutes throughout the second stanza.

After Salem made the first shot of the second half, Cass and Talbert knocked down back-to-back threes. One minute later, Talbert sent the ball over to Cass for another three.

Cass had 10 points in the first half and finished the game with a career-high 16. Talbert was not far behind, as he scored 12 in the second and finished the contest with 15, also a season-high. Both players came off the bench.

Despite the hot shooting by NDC, Salem would not go away. Between the 16:16-mark and the 11:46-mark, the game featured eight lead changes.

The Falcons were unable to expand their lead past five points until Talbert and Williams hit back-to-back threes, giving NDC a 69-61 lead, with 8:08 remaining.

A block by junior Gbolahan Adio led to a fastbreak layup by Harris and NDC pushed the lead to double-digits for the first time (79-68), with 3:56 to go.

After that point, Salem was able to get the deficit under 10, only twice.

Notre Dame's 16 made threes is tied for the fifth most in a game in program history. The Falcons shot the ball at 45.7-percent from three, which is the second highest mark of the season. Only 11 of the shots made by the Falcons in the game were two-point baskets.

NDC also tied a season-high with 23 offensive rebounds and their 49 total rebounds is third-most this season.

Behind Cass and Talbert, Williams added 14 points to lead the starting unit. Dames finished with 11 points and a season-high 11 rebounds, including eight offensive rebounds. Harris had 10 points and seven boards.

Next Wednesday, Notre Dame will be in Buckhannon, W.Va. to take on West Virginia Wesleyan. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
