Clutch two-out hitting and a three-run seventh inning gives NDC a win on Wednesday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PHILIPPI, W.Va. – Trailing 6-2 against Alderson Broaddus University, Notre Dame College scored one run in both the fifth and sixth inning before striking for three more in the seventh to grab a 7-6 win in game two of the doubleheader. Ella Collinsworth went 4-for-4 at the plate and Destany Blake was 3-for-3. Alderson Broaddus did win game one of the day, by a score of 2-1.

The Falcons and Battlers were locked in a pitching duel throughout the first contest of the doubleheader. Grace Sobeck walked to lead off the bottom of the second inning, moved to second on a groundout and came home to score on the first hit of the game, which was a double by Lawson Gerland.

Junior Meadow Odum had NDC's first hit of the game, when she doubled in the fourth inning, but did not score.

Alderson Broaddus' pitcher Amber Corley pitched a complete game, allowing just one run on five hits. She also struck out five hitters. On the other side, freshman Grace Fisher pitched well for the Falcons. She allowed two runs over six innings pitched, while striking out six.

A leadoff single, followed by a sacrifice bunt and a double gave AB its second run, and what would turn out to be the game-winner.

The Falcons attempted to respond in the top of the sixth, but could only put one run on the board. Freshman Danielle Fick singled and stole second, with one out, before sophomore Emma Gumont singled to score Notre Dame's only run of game one.

The action began early in game two, as Alderson Broaddus jumped on the board in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI single scored one run and an error, later in the inning, allowed two more to cross the plate.

NDC was playing from behind throughout most of the contest. Fick singled, with one out in the third inning, and stole second base. With two out, Gumont worked her magic again by driving the ball to left-center field for a two-run home run.

The two-out runs became a trend in game two. All seven of the Falcons' runs were scored with two out in an inning.

Notre Dame's pitcher Allison Weilnau did not allow a hit in the second and third inning, but AB got the offense going again in the fourth. The Battlers did not have an extra-base hit in the frame, but kept the line moving with four singles and pushed three more runs across the plate to take a 6-2 lead.

Aside from two difficult innings, Weilnau gave the Falcons what they needed. She pitched a complete game, getting the win and striking out five batters.

The Falcons had left a couple on base in both the second inning and fourth inning, but began to cash in some of their base runners in the fifth. Junior Madison Olszewski led off with a single and stole second. She had two stolen bases in the game, which is a career-high. A groundout moved her to third base and then a two-out single by Gumont drove the run in.

Once again, Notre Dame was threatening in the sixth inning, with two out. With runners on first and second base, pinch-hitter Mia Cipriano put a line drive base hit into right field to score a run and cut the deficit to two, 6-4.

Alderson Broaddus had back-to-back singles in the bottom of the sixth, but could not score and NDC took advantage. In the top of the seventh, Odum was hit by a pitch to begin the inning. Gumont reached first on an error and the next two Falcons were called out. Down to their final out, the Falcons remained calm. Sophomore Ella Collinsworth stepped up with her fourth hit of the day, a game-tying two-run triple to left-center. Sophomore Destany Blake came up next and sent the ball over the head of the Battlers' shortstop, Hailee Culberson, and into left field for the go-ahead RBI.

Collinsworth had a career-high four hits, with two RBI, while Blake had her best day as a Falcon, going 3-for-3. Gumont finished with two hits and three RBI. Over the two games on Wednesday, she had three hits and four RBI. NDC stole five bases as Fick, Gumont and Collinsworth all stole one to go along with Olszewski's two.

Notre Dame will visit Davis & Elkins College, on April 1. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
