Softball’s run in the MEC Tournament ends on Friday

TROUTVILLE, Va. – Notre Dame College had an incredible season in 2024. Despite falling to No. 11 University of Charleston, 4-2, and Davis & Elkins College, 2-0, on Friday, the Falcons still broke their NCAA Division II era program record in wins, with 35 victories this season. And on the first two days of the Mountain East Conference Tournament, NDC defeated Glenville State and Fairmont State, two teams ranked in the top nine in the NCAA D2 Atlantic Region poll.

On Friday afternoon, NDC fell behind 2-0 to nationally-ranked Charleston in the first two innings. But, NDC's senior Katelyn DeWeese led off the top of the third inning with a single. She then stole second base for her 30th steal of the year, the most by a Falcon since 1994. Later in the third, with two out, freshman Avery Robinson hit an RBI single to put Notre Dame on the scoreboard. That was the first run given up by UC throughout the tournament.

The Golden Eagles added another run in the fourth inning, but the Falcons stuck around and had a chance at another upset win. Robinson singled to start the sixth inning and then freshman Jocelyn Quior put down a bunt and reached first base. Juniors Alyssa Wahl and Ella Collinsworth both hit into a fielder's choice, and Collinsworth was credited with an RBI to make the score 3-2.

In the bottom of the sixth, Charleston was threatening with runners on first and second base and took advantage of a few mistakes to score an important fourth run on a wild pitch.

Even with a loss, NDC still had an opportunity to advance with the double-elimination style tournament.

Davis & Elkins was the No. 3 seed in the South Division, and they upset the North's No. 2 seed Frostburg State and the South's No. 2 seed Glenville State, but lost to Charleston over the first two days of the tournament. Earlier on Friday, the Senators beat West Liberty, 12-1, to move on to face the Falcons.

Sophomore Grace Fisher was called upon again to start versus D&E, while the Senators sent out Sammie Jarvis. Those two pitchers put on a show, with Fisher going eight innings, while striking out six and Jarvis going eight innings, while striking out four. Fisher had three strikeouts by the third inning and became the first Falcon with 200 strikeouts in a season.

Both teams had opportunities to score as they combined for 12 hits in the contest. However, the game was scoreless after seven innings and the teams went to extras.

In the top of the eighth inning, D&E put together three consecutive singles to plate two runs.
