TIFFIN, Ohio –
La'Ron Parks went 4-1 at the Super Regional III Tournament and took third place in a very difficult heavyweight bracket, on Saturday.
Matthew Kaufmann (149 lbs.),
Cale Hoskinson (157) and
Marvelous Rutledge (197) all battled through the consolation bracket to take fifth place.
Parks, ranked No. 12 in Division II, had a solid day on the mat, starting with an 11-2 major decision over Wheeling's Zach Kuneff. He then shut down Ashland's Ty Petrey with a 4-0 decision in the quarterfinal. Against No. 5 ranked Francesco Borsellino in the semifinals, Parks trailed by just one point heading into the third period, but eventually lost, 4-0. He then snuck past both Keigan Yuhas (1-0 decision) and Clayton Ours (5-4 decision) to both secure a spot on the podium and qualify for a chance at a National Championship, for the second consecutive season.
Matthew Kaufmann stumbled out of the gate and lost to Caleb Fritz, of Bluefield State, in the first round. He would later get revenge for that early loss. Kaufmann pinned both Dylan Mansor (Tiffin) and Joshua Sharron (Wheeling) in the consolation bracket. After a loss in the consolation semifinals, he met up with Fritz, again. This time, the Falcon grappler took fifth-place with a 5-3 decision victory.
No. 12 ranked
Cale Hoskinson (157) was in a very tough weight class, as well. He won by decision against Glenville State's Tristan Pugh in the quarterfinals, but then lost to No. 6 Casey Barnett (Tiffin) and Jack Haskin (Lake Erie) in close matches. He would face Pugh, once again, in the fifth-place match and took the victory.
Marvelous Rutledge had an exciting start to his day. Davenport's Crue Cooper grabbed a 6-4 lead and a 7-6 lead in the second period, but Rutledge continued to tie or take the lead back. In the third, Rutledge used a takedown to grab an 8-7 lead, but a late escape by Cooper knotted the score up, again. In overtime, Rutledge won with another takedown. He defeated Davis & Elkins' Michael Schneider in consolation round two and later, advanced past Cooper in the fifth-place match, after a medical forfeit.
As a team, NDC took seventh place, with 47 points.
Parks will be on the road to Cedar Rapids, Iowa for the NCAA Division II National Championships on March 10-11.
