INDIANAPOLIS – Over the weekend, Notre Dame College wrestling traveled to Indiana for the Midwest Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis. It was the final competition for the Falcons of the 2023 calendar year.
At 149 lbs.,
Parker Moore pinned Jacob Davis, of Minnesota State Moorhead, at the 5:24-mark,
Melvin Patterson (165 lbs.) took down Wheeling's Brian Crevar by decision (8-4) and
Thomas Schmitt (184 lbs.) defeated East Stroudsburg's Jarret Pantuso by major decision (20-7).
Marvelous Rutledge had, what would probably be considered, the most impressive win of the weekend for NDC. At 197 lbs., the redshirt-freshman took down Logan Kvien (McKendree), who was ranked No. 6 in the country at that weight class, with a 4-1 decision. At heavyweight, No. 6
La'Ron Parks won twice. In a close 5-1 decision, Parks defeated Mount Olive's Slade Watkins, in the first tie-breaker period. Later, in the consolation bracket, Parks defeated Christian Taylor (Mercyhurst) with an 8-0 major decision.
As a team, NDC gathered eight points over the two-day tournament.
Notre Dame hosts Gannon University, on Jan. 5. That will be the first home dual meet for the Falcons since Jan. 20, 2022.
