Women's basketball back in MEC play this week

This Week: The Notre Dame College women's basketball team jumps back into conference play on Wednesday Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m. as Glenville State University enters Murphy Gymnasium. On Saturday Dec. 2, the Falcons head to Concord University to face the Mountain Lions at 2 p.m.
 
Records: NDC begins the week at 1-5 (0-2 MEC), as GSU sits at 4-2 (1-1 MEC), and CU maintains a 3-2 (2-0 MEC) record.
 
Coaches Corner: Lauren Macer is back at the helm of the Notre Dame College women's basketball team in her second stint and fifth season as head coach. Macer, the 2019-20 MEC Coach of the Year, maintains a 79-37 career record. Emily Stoller is in her first season as the head coach of Glenville State. Tesla Southcott begins her second season as Concord's head coach, holding a 17-19 career mark.
 
Rankings: Glenville State checks in ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II according to the latest Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) poll.
 
Series History: NDC is 2-20 all-time when playing against Glenville State, dating back to their first meeting in 2013-14, and including the Pioneers pair of victories last season. The Falcons own a 16-6 all-time record against Concord, dating back to their first meeting in 2011-12, and including the Mountain Lions three victories last season, most recently in the MEC Tournament 78-67.
 
Noting the Falcons: Last week, Notre Dame dropped both contests, beginning with a hard-fought 84-75 defeat at West Liberty. The Falcons erased a 25-point second half deficit to pull within single digits, and despite Noel Weathers' career-high 25 points, NDC was bested on the road. On Sunday, the Falcons battled Ohio Dominican in a non-conference bout, which featured Notre Dame posting the third-best (62.5%) three-point percentage and tied eighth-best field goal percentage (57.4%) in program history. However, the Falcons fell to the Panthers 79-73.
 
The Falcons boast a trio of top 20 scorers in the Mountain East Conference, led by Weathers' team-high 14.7 points per game, seventh in the MEC. Lilee Carlson adds 12.2 ppg (17th) while Kennadi Harris offers 11.5 ppg (20th), as Carlson (52.1%) and Weathers (48.7%) are both top 10 in the MEC in field goal percentage. Moreover, Harris owns a clip from beyond the three-point line, touting the top three-point percentage (62.5%) in the conference and ninth-best mark in the entire country. Harris is also seated eighth in the MEC averaging 2.2 three-pointers made per game.
 
Rachel Richardson chips in 9.5 ppg, whiling dishing out a team-high 2.0 assists per game.
 
On the glass, Weathers ranks fifth in the MEC at 8.0 rebounds per game, as Cencere McDaniel checks in next with 3.5 rpg. In addition, Weathers is seated tied fifth in the conference with 1.0 blocks per game, while Mallory Hullinger leads the team and is 13th in the MEC with 1.8 steals per game.
 
As a team, Notre Dame averages 71.0 ppg on 42.9-percent shooting from the floor, 37.1-percent shooting from three and 62.5-percent shooting from the free throw line. The Falcons add 32.7 rebounds per game (-5.5 margin), 12.2 assists per game, 8.7 steals per game and 3.5 blocks per game.
 
Noting the Pioneers: Last week, Glenville State bested Charleston 96-73 on Tuesday on the road, which featured GSU outscoring UC 31-15 in the first quarter, alongside Lauren Calhoun's team-high 16 points to fuel the win. This past Monday, GSU dropped a non-conference road match to Pitt-Johnstown 101-81, despite Hya Haywood's team-high 27 points.
 
Glenville State is led by a trio of double digit scorers in Haywood (18.0 ppg), Calhoun (15.8 ppg) and Chalon Miles (11.6), as the three\\Pioneers rank tied second, tied fifth and 20th, respectively in the MEC. In addition, Calhoun (60.4%) and Haywood (46.6%) tout top 10 field goal percentages in the league. GSU looks to score from several different avenues as six players post 15 or more three-point attempts this year.
 
Four Pioneers facilitate the offense with double-digit assists totals, led by Esther Oluade's team-high 13.
 
On the boards, Calhoun in tied for sixth in the MEC at 7.8 rebounds per game, while Zhordan Shannon adds 4.0 rpg.
 
The Pioneers are elite at stealing the ball, as five players are inside the top 10 in the conference in steals per game. As a unit, GSU is third in the country with20.5 steals per game, led by Haywood's team-high 3.8 spg (7th in DII).
 
As a team, Glenville State averages, 91.0 points per game on 42.7-percent shooting from the floor, 29.0-percent shooting from three and 61.2-percent shooting from the free throw line. The Pioneers add 39.0 rebounds per game (-2.4 margin), 14.6 assists per game, 20.5 steals per game and 0.8 blocks per game. GSU is fifth in NCAA Division II in points per game.
 
Noting the Mountain Lions: Last week, Concord started MEC-play on the right foot, defeating Charleston 54-44 on Saturday, before turning around to best No. 13 West Virginia State 70-57. The Mountain Lions were carried by their defense, while Abbie Smith turned in a game-high 16 against UC and Josiah Smith tallied a game-high 20 on WVSU.
 
Concord is led by A. Smith (13.0 ppg), J. Smith (12.8 ppg) and Skylar Davidson (11.4 ppg), ranking 11th, 13th and 21st in the MEC. CU looks to play the ball inside, as zero players have attempted more than 15 three-pointers on the season. Alexis Phillips is the team's leading three-point shooter at 4-13 from downtown and 14-14 from the free throw line.
 
The Mountain Lions are active on the glass, as both Phillips (8.6 rpg) and A.Smith (8.4 rpg) are top five in the conference in rebounds per game. J. Smith (6.2 rpg) and Davidson (5.8 rpg) are also top 20 rebounders in the league.
 
Davidson adds 2.8 assists per game to lead the team and be 13th in the MEC, as Phillips leads the MEC and ranks t-27th in the country at 2.0 blocks per game.
 
As a unit, Concord averages 67.4 points per game on 38.1-percent shooting from the field, 25.4-percent shooting from three and 65.3-percent shooting from the charity stripe.  The Mountain Lions add 45.8 rebounds per game (+1.2), 10.6 assists per game, 10.0 steals per game and 4.4 blocks per game. CU is seated 13th in NCAA Division II in rebounds per game.
