Trek through MEC play continues for women's basketball

This Week: The Notre Dame College women's basketball team heads to Wheeling University on Wednesday Jan. 18 at 5:30 p.m. Next, the Falcons will host Alderson Broaddus University on Saturday Jan. 21 at 2 p.m.
 
Records: NDC begins the week at 4-12 (3-7 MEC), and tied for seventh place in the Mountain East Conference. WU sits at 9-7 (7-3 MEC), while AB is 4-11 (3-7 MEC). The Cardinals and Battlers are tied for fourth and seventh place in the MEC, respectively.
 
Coaches Corner: Imani Gordon is in her second season as the head coach of Notre Dame College, holding a career record of 19-26. Anna Kowalska is the head coach of Wheeling University in her first season. Ta-Rel Franklin is also in his first season as head coach of Alderson Broaddus.
 
Rankings: None of these teams are ranked according to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Poll.
 
Series History: The Falcons hold a 15-6 all-time record against Wheeling, dating back to their first meeting in 2013-14, and including NDC's 55-51 victory in South Euclid back on Nov. 19. Notre Dame is 3-1 when facing Alderson Broaddus in the all-time series history, dating back to their first meeting in 2020-21, as the two sides split their pair of contests last season.
 
Noting the Falcons: Last week, the Falcons faced steep competition from West Virginia State and No. 13 Charleston. NDC went 0-2 with a 93-69 defeat to WV State, followed by an 82-46 loss at No. 13 UC.
 
Redshirt sophomore Alana Ellis leads the Notre Dame College offense on the season as she ranks seventh in the MEC at 17.2 points per game. She paces NDC in field goals made (99) and attempted (268), three-pointers made (26) and attempted (89) and free throws attempted (60).
 
Freshman Noel Weathers is the Falcons second-leading scorer at 9.5 ppg. The Cincinnati, Ohio native leads Notre Dame in blocked shots (13) and rebounding (6.5), ranking fifth and tied for 13th in the MEC, respectively.
 
Senior Marina Adachi offers the three-point threat for NDC, converting at 40.3% (25-62).
 
Junior Lizzie Imrie gets the job done in multiple ways by averaging 6.8 ppg, 5.8 rpg and 2.1 assists per game. Imrie ranks second on the team in rebounds and first on the team in assists.
 
As a whole, Notre Dame averages 62.2 ppg on 37.5% shooting from the floor, 29.6% shooting from three and 67.2% shooting from the free throw line. The Falcons grab 33.1 rebounds per game (-9.6 margin), 10.5 assists per game, 9.1 steals per game and 2.6 blocks per game.
 
Noting the Cardinals: Last week, Wheeling extended their winning streak to three games after picking up a pair of victories. On Wednesday, WU took down Fairmont State 92-81 as Lauren Calhoun flashed 24 points and 15 rebounds. On Saturday, the Cardinals beat Frostburg State 74-69 with Calhoun generating 21 points and 15 rebounds.
 
The aforementioned Calhoun is the clear leader for the Cardinals, averaging 19.0 ppg and 11.9 rpg. Calhoun ranks fourth in the MEC in scoring and first in rebounding, while being eighth in the county in double-doubles (10), ninth in rebounds per game and 23rd in points per game. Moreover, Calhoun has the most field goals made (114) and attempted (220), and free throws made (76) and attempted (110) on the team.
 
Shanley Woods compliments Calhoun with 10.1 ppg as the only other Cardinal to average double figures. Woods is second on the team in shots made and attempted, while leading the team in three-pointers made (35) and attempted (99).
 
Kenzie Dalton is a stat sheet stuffer, averaging 5.9 ppg, 5.4 rpg and 4.2 apg. Dalton is second on the team in rebounding and first is assists, as she currently ranks second inside the Mountain East for assists per game.
 
As a team, Wheeling scores 69.9 ppg on 41.7% shooting from the floor, 28.7% shooting from three and 65.5% shooting from the free throw line. The Cardinals secure 38.8 rpg (+1.0 margin), 12.8 apg, 7.4 spg and 2.9 bpg.
 
Noting the Battlers: Last week, Alderson Broaddus upset No. 13 Charleston 60-57 on Wednesday with Iyahnna Williams registering a 20-point 10-rebound double-double. AB followed up the big win with a 112-49 defeat at West Virginia State where Hannah Taylor posted 13 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Alderson Broaddus looks to run through Williams on both ends of the floor as she leads the team in points (18.5), rebounds (8.7), assists (31), steals (31) and blocks (13). Williams has team-highs in shots made (106) and attempted (222), field goal percentage (47.7%), three-point percentage (28.6%) and free throws made (56) and attempted (84).
 
Moreover, Williams ranks fifth in the MEC in scoring and rebounding, sixth in blocks, seventh in steals and tied for 17th in assists.
 
Hannah Taylor is the second option for Alderson Broaddus at 11.9 ppg and 6.5 rpg, both top 20 marks in the MEC.
 
Amil Mitchell is the final Battler in double figures (10.1) as she poses the top shooting threat on the team. Mitchell has the most three-pointers made (15) and attempted (67) on the team, as well as the top free throw percentage (76.9%).
 
As a unit, Alderson Broaddus averages 67.1 ppg on 38.4% shooting from the floor, 23.7% shooting from deep and 70.4% shooting from the free throw line. In addition, AB collects 37.2 rpg (-8.4 margin), 9.6 apg, 9.0 spg and 3.2 bpg.
