This Week: Notre Dame College softball will host Alderson Broaddus University for a doubleheader on April 7, with a start time of 1 p.m. The Falcons will then go on the road to face Fairmont State, on April 11, and Frostburg State, on April 12. The doubleheader against Fairmont State will begin at 4 p.m. and the matchup with Frostburg State will begin at noon.
Schedule Change: NDC's home games against Alderson Broaddus were moved from April 6 to April 7, due to rain. The road games with Fairmont State and Frostburg State have been moved to next week due to weather concerns over the weekend. The doubleheader that was scheduled against Gannon on Tuesday has been postponed.
Records:Â Notre Dame enters the week at 10-16, overall, and 3-7 in the Mountain East Conference. Alderson Broaddus has a record of 11-19 (2-10 MEC), Frostburg State sits at 15-8 (10-2 MEC) and Fairmont State is 9-13 (5-7 MEC). Gannon is currently 10-8 on the year.
Coaches Corner: Kelsey Stopp is now in her fourth season as head coach of the Falcons. She has a record of 51-81 (27-47 MEC). John Light is in year number six at Fairmont State with a coaching mark of 101-123 (73-67 MEC). Nikki Nuzum is the head coach at Alderson Broaddus and Bill Vasko is now in his fourth campaign at Frostburg State. Michelle Wiley is in her third season as the head coach at Gannon.
Rankings:Â None of these teams are ranked in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II top 25 poll.
Series History:Â Notre Dame has gone 4-0 all-time against Alderson Broaddus. NDC is 13-16 against Fairmont State and 0-7 versus Frostburg State. With the first meeting in 2014, Notre Dame holds a 3-5 mark against Gannon.
Noting the NDC Falcons:Â The NDC Falcons were busy last week, playing three doubleheaders in four days. They were scheduled to play two against West Virginia Wesleyan, on Sunday, but snow on the field postponed those games. Notre Dame went 2-4.
On the offensive side,
Alexi Maciejowski highlighted the week by posting a hit in all six games. She went 10-for-17 (.588) at the plate with seven RBI, a double, triple and two home runs. She also had an RBI in five of the six games. The senior now leads the Falcons in many offensive categories, including OPS (1.216), hits (33), triples (2), home runs (7), RBI (33), total bases (65), slugging percentage (.783) and tied for the team lead in doubles (7) and second in batting average (.398). Maciejowski is 11th in NCAA Division II in runs batted in per game, averaging 1.27. She is currently second in the MEC in home runs, RBI, total bases and is fifth in slugging percentage.
In the circle, Weilnau threw a complete game, against both Frostburg State and Davis & Elkins last week. She combined for two earned runs and seven strikeouts in those two games. Overall, she appeared in five games during the week, which included 21 1/3 innings, allowing 11 runs, 7 earned runs, along with 10 strikeouts.
The NDC Falcons currently have four players hitting over .300.
Daniele Rivera leads the team with a .400 batting average in 75 at bats.
Noting the Battlers: Alderson Broaddus started the week strong by splitting a series with Frostburg State, scoring seven runs in both games, and then sweeping Salem, and totaling 27 runs in that series. However, they ran into W.Va Wesleyan and Davis & Elkins over the weekend and went 0-4. In those four games, they allowed 36 runs, while scoring seven.
Hailee Culbertson is fifth in the conference with a batting average of .448. She leads the Battlers 24 hits, 18 RBI, 34 total bases and is tied for first with five doubles.
As a team, AB leads the MEC in runs (175), they are second in hits (275), second in RBI (142), third in batting average (.298), third in total bases (357). On defense, they are fourth with a .958 fielding percentage. However, their pitching has the highest batting average against in the league (.332).
Noting the FSU Falcons: Fairmont State had a rollercoaster week. They split with NDC and then swept Wheeling, but dropped both games against West Liberty. They were held to just four runs in two games against WLU after scoring 17 the day before against Wheeling
Emily Riggs is sixth in the MEC in slugging percentage (.726), eighth in batting average (.411) and eighth in RBI (24).
Ally Maddy ranks eighth in ERA (3.13) and ninth in batting average against (.233).
Noting the FSU Bobcats:Â Frostburg State went 6-2 last week, sweeping NDC and Wheeling and splitting with Alderson Broaddus and West Liberty. In the two losses, Frostburg State allowed seven runs. Aside from the first game of the week, the pitching did not allow more than four runs in a win.
Brianna Powell is second in the conference with two triples, fourth in slugging percentage at .797 and fifth in both RBI (26) and total bases (55). Jayla Hill is tied for third with six home runs and Katie Ernst is third in the conference with an on-base percentage of .549.
Katie Chapple is tied for fourth in the conference with eight complete games. She is sixth with 74 innings pitched and seventh in batting average against at .228.
As a team, the Bobcats rank third in slugging percentage (.438) and fielding percentage (.959).
Noting the Golden Knights: Gannon had six games postponed last week. GU only played on Saturday, as they swept Slippery Rock.
In game one against SRU, Gannon's Kennedy DeMatteis (4-5) took the win with a complete game shutout. She struck out 12 as the Golden Knights won 1-0. Gannon won game two, 5-3, as Abbey Girman had the big hit, batting ninth in the lineup, with a three-run homer in the second inning. Rebecca Tatone (3-2) picked up the win after entering the game in the third inning and allowing one run in five innings of work.
Kristina DeMatteis leads the team with a .407 batting average, a 1.092 OPS, 22 hits, four home runs, 14 RBI, 37 total bases and a .685 slugging percentage. As a team, Gannon is hitting just .237, but opponents are batting .227 against their pitching. Kennedy DeMatteis, Gabi Vasi and Rebecca Tatone have all appeared in at least eight games in the circle. They have combined for an ERA of 2.07 with 91 strikeouts.
