Softball prepares for busy weekend in West Virginia

This Week: Notre Dame College softball travels all weekend, beginning with Alderson Broaddus University on April 22, with start times of 2 and 4 p.m. The Falcons then head to Glenville State University (April 23, 12 & 2 p.m.) and Concord University (April 24, 12 & 2 p.m.).

Records: Notre Dame enters the week at 15-21, overall, and 8-12 in the Mountain East Conference. Alderson Broaddus is currently 15-27 with a 4-18 mark in the MEC. Glenville State holds an overall record of 14-21 (10-13 MEC) while Concord is 15-29 (8-16 MEC).

Coaches Corner: Kelsey Stopp is now in her fourth season as head coach of the Falcons. She has a record of 56-86 (32-52 MEC). Sara Scoone is in her second season with Glenville State and has a record of 25-51 (20-35 MEC). Nikki Nuzum is at the helm of the Battlers program and Alyssa Morris leads Concord.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II top 25 poll.

Series History: Notre Dame first started playing Alderson Broaddus last season and the Falcons hold a 6-0 record against the Battlers. NDC is 8-6 all-time against GSU and 8-10 versus Concord.

Noting the Falcons: NDC went 3-5 last week. They traveled to Fairmont State and Frostburg State to start the week, dropping all four games. The Falcons came home and took three of four games from two teams who were near the top of the South Division. They swept West Virginia State and went 1-1 against Charleston.

Emily Marsh went 8-for-27 (.296) at the plate. She came into the week with four doubles and zero home runs, but hit five doubles and two big flies last week. She also recorded 10 runs batted in. In a 6-5 loss in game two against Frostburg State, she hit a game-tying homer in the top of the seventh inning. Against Charleston in game two, she tied a career-high with three hits and was a triple shy of the cycle. She set a career-high with five RBI. Daniele Rivera also hit the ball extremely well, with an average of .464 and two three-hit games during the week.

Madison Olszewski gave the Falcons a solid week in the circle. In 24 1/3 innings, she allowed nine earned runs, striking out 17 batters. In the second game against Charleston, an 8-1 win, she allowed one unearned run and struck out a career-high eight batters in a complete game. She struck out at least one hitter in every inning. This season, Olszewski has a 3.16 ERA.

Daniele Rivera leads the team with a .431 average and a .516 on base percentage. Alexi Maciejowski has nine home runs, three triples, 40 RBI and 82 total bases, leading the team in all those categories. Lexi Rehm leads the team with 12 doubles.

Noting the Battlers: Last week, Alderson Broaddus went 4-4. They split a doubleheader with Frostburg State, swept Salem, lost both to Charleston and then split a doubleheader against West Virginia State.

Neveah Uzueta had a solid week, totaling 11 hits, six RBI, three triples and two doubles. In a game against Salem, she totaled four hits, three RBI, a double and two triples. She is hitting .363 this season with five triples. Hailee Culbertson leads the Battlers this year with a .364 average, 36 hits, seven doubles, 26 RBI and 48 total bases.

Noting the Pioneers: Glenville State has won eight of their last nine games. Entering last week, they had just two conference wins. GSU swept Wheeling and Fairmont State last week and then took both games against Concord, yesterday. They also split a doubleheader against Frostburg State. The Pioneers pitching stepped up and from April 11 to April 20, they recorded three shutouts and held opponents to two runs, or less, in seven games.

Holly Brehm threw two complete game shutouts and went 6-1 over 36 1/3 innings pitched last week. Sophia Delvecchio had two doubles and three home runs over the last week and a half to go along with two games of four RBI. She has five homers this season.

In 2022, Ashton Palmer is leading the team with a .337 batting average. Haylee Stevens is at the top of the squad with 33 hits, nine doubles and 50 total bases. Holly Brehm has a 3.32 ERA this season, with an 11-7 record, 15 complete games and 174 strikeouts.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord is currently on a three-game losing streak, including two losses to Glenville State last night. However, the Mountain Lions played really well last week, sweeping Wheeling and Frostburg State, before splitting with Fairmont State. Concord's offense scored four, or more, runs in five games over the last week and a half.

Kassidy Garvey hit safely in the first five games last week. She homered in both games against Wheeling and totaled five RBI in that doubleheader. Garvey finished the week with 10 RBI.

Laura Thompson leads the team with a .341 average, 11 doubles, three triples and a .524 slugging percentage. This season, Caitlyn Bauer has nine wins and a 3.51 ERA. Bauer has struck out 107 hitters in 119 2/3 innings.
