INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Notre Dame College wrestling competed in the Greyhound Duals on Saturday, hosted by the University of Indianapolis. With a comeback victory, they upset No. 9 ranked University of Findlay, 24-19. After falling to No. 5 McKendree University by a score of 32-9, the Falcons finished strong with a 51-0 win over Kentucky Wesleyan College.
Matthew Kaufmann went 3-0 at 149 lbs.
The Falcons got off to a difficult start against Findlay. At 125,
Brett Strandahl lost to Zachary Collins and, after an NDC forfeit at 133,
Dylan Burnoski lost by major decision against No. 2 ranked Branson Proudlock at 141. However, NDC would only lose one more time in the dual. Kaufmann,
Sandro Ramirez and
Cale Hoskinson gave NDC three points, each, with wins by decision. Down 19-9,
Logan Hall won by decision at 184 and then
Thomas Schmitt gave NDC a much need pin at 197. With the six points from the fall, NDC added six more points with a forfeit at heavyweight and scored 15 unanswered points for the win.
Notre Dame went up against another tough team, right away. Burnoski was able to pin McKendree's Brody Norman at 141 and then Kaufmann continued his perfect day by defeating Christian Laguerre by decision (4-1). However, McKendree had wrestlers ranked in the top four in the country at 125, 165, 184 and heavyweight and they were too much for NDC.
Against Kentucky Wesleyan, the Falcons did not lose a single bout. Along with three forfeits, Burnoski, Kaufmann, Hoskinson,
Ryne Lewis and
Michael Viramontes all won via fall. The highlight was Burnoski pinning Gabe Adams in 12 seconds. Ramirez also won with an 11-5 decision.
"The team is progressing in the right direction and the guys are gaining ground each week," head coach
Sonny Marchette said. "Today, the guys wrestled hard and fought well. I look forward to what the future holds for the wrestlers."
Notre Dame will wrestle at home one final time, on Feb. 15, when they take on Davis & Elkins College. The dual is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
