Four Falcons take first place, eight total wrestlers place in top three at JCU

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio – On Sunday, Notre Dame College wrestling went down the street and competed in the John Carroll University Open. Tarrence Daugherty Jr., Matthew Kaufmann, Logan Hall and La'Ron Parks all took first place in their weight brackets.

At 141 lbs. in the Gold Bracket, Daugherty made quick work of Gannon's Caleb Chaves in round one (fall, 0:55) and then beat Kent State's Mikey Lewarchick by decision (6-1). He would come home in first place after a medical forfeit in the final round.

In the Blue Bracket at 149 lbs., Kaufmann put together another solid day on the mat. After receiving a bye in the first round, he easily got past Slippery Rock's Caden Reamer with a 12-0 major decision. Ryan Forrest, representing the host John Carroll, was up next and Kaufmann beat him with a 10-8 decision. Forrest would finish third. To end the day, Kaufmann pinned University of Akron's Andrew Halko and grabbed first place.

At 184 lbs. in the Gold Bracket, Hall worked his way through a smaller bracket. After earning a bye in round one, he defeated Cleveland State's Joseph Lyons with a 5-2 decision. In the first place match, he pinned Grand Valley State's Seth Konynenbelt at the 4:05-mark.

NDC had three wrestlers in the heavyweight division in the Gold Bracket. Parks won by fall against Mercyhurst's Reagan Soledad and then defeated Lake Erie's Matt Micale by tech fall (18-3). All three of the Falcons wrestlers were in the semifinals (Parks, Marvelous Rutledge, Michael Viramontes). Parks matched up with Rutledge and Parks defeated his teammate, with a 12-2 major decision. Bryan Caves (Central Michigan) was Parks' next opponent and the Falcons' grappler won by decision (7-6). Rutledge would take third place.

Melvin Patterson wrestled at 157 lbs. in the Blue Bracket. After winning twice, he lost in the semifinals and had to win two more times to take third place. He won in sudden victory against John Carroll's Liam Helon for third place.

At 165 in the Blue Bracket, Cale Hoskinson won one time, before falling in the semifinals. He wrestled back with a pin of Ashland's Tyler Barry and then took down John Carroll's Adam Salek, by decision, in the third place match.

At 174 lbs. in the Blue Bracket, NDC had three wrestlers competing. Devin Oligee and Ryne Lewis won once before losing and battled for third place. Ethan Aguiniga was also battling for third place after an early defeat. However, Aguiniga was able to battle back and defeated his teammate, Oligee, by decision for third place.

The Falcons will head to West Liberty, W.Va. for the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament on Feb. 26.
