This Week: Notre Dame College men's basketball remains on the road to battle Davis & Elkins College, on Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. The Falcons will come home to play West Virginia Wesleyan College, on Dec. 10, at 4 p.m.
Records: NDC has an overall record of 3-4, while starting the season 2-2 in Mountain East Conference play. Davis & Elkins holds a record of 6-2 (2-2 MEC), which is the program's best start to a season since the 2013-14 season. West Virginia Wesleyan enters the week with a 1-6 mark and a 1-3 record in conference play. The Bobcats are still looking for their first win on the road (0-4).
Coaches Corner: Mark Richmond enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Falcons. He has an overall record of 35-47 with a 29-37 MEC mark. Daniel Mondragon is also in his fourth season with D&E, holding a record of 26-54. Derek Sloan is now in his second campaign as head coach at WVWC, but has spent four seasons on the staff in Buckhannon. He has a record of 3-32.
Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Top 25 Poll.
Series History: NDC has had success against the Senators, going 6-0 versus D&E since the first meeting in 2010. Since Davis & Elkins joined the conference in the 2019-20 season, the Falcons have averaged 85.2 points per game against them. Notre Dame first played West Virginia Wesleyan in the 2012-13 season and hold a 10-8 record against the Bobcats, including wins in the last three matchups.
Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame played two games last week, going 1-1. On Wednesday, the Falcons defeated Glenville State, 77-73, and over the weekend, they fell to Concord, 85-80.
In the win over Glenville State,
Jaedon Willis led the way on the offensive end with 22 points and four assists.
DeAirius Barker, who had a solid week, added 11 points and four assists. The Falcons led 34-26 at halftime and then shot 54-percent in the second half to hold off the Pioneers. Against Concord, Barker led the team with 17 points and seven rebounds in 27 minutes off the bench.
Daylin Lee also had 14 points off the bench, which includes an 8-for-8 mark at the free throw line.
As a team, the Falcons are fifth in the Mountain East Conference with 82.6 points per game. NDC is second in the conference with a three-point field goal percentage of 40-percent. On the defensive side, they hold teams to a 42.8-percent field goal percentage and a 31.7-percent three-point percentage, which ranks third in the MEC in both categories. The Falcons are third in the MEC by bringing down 27.4 defensive rebounds per game. They make 17.1 free throws per game, which is 23rd in the country.
Jaedon Willis leads the conference with 22.7 points per game, ranks fourth in three-point percentage (40-percent), fourth in three-pointers per game (2.6) and fourth in minutes per game (32.4). Willis is now eighth in the country in points per game and ninth in free throws made, with 47.
Andre Harris leads the team with 4.7 rebounds per game. Both Willis and
DeAirius Barker lead NDC with 2.7 assists per contest.
Noting the Senators: Davis & Ekins has gotten off to an impressive start. Their only losses have come against nationally ranked Fairmont State and West Liberty. Last week, the Senators played three times and went 2-1. They took down Seton Hill, 100-95, in double-overtime, beat Wheeling, 77-75, and fell to No. 5 West Liberty, 101-64.
In the win over Seton Hill, the Senators were behind 37-33 at halftime, but scored 46 points in the second half to end regulation tied at 79. They would outscore Seton Hill, 12-7, in the second overtime period to grab the win. Sam Rolle IV played 46 minutes and scored 29 points to go along with eight rebounds and seven assists. He made five three-pointers and 12 free throws. Vadim Clanet scored 23 points and made four long range shots. As a team, D&E connected on 15 threes. In the victory against Wheeling, the Cardinals made 14 three-pointers but Davis & Elkins shot the ball at 53-percent. Four of the Senators' starters, Rolle IV (18 points, 8-for-13 shooting), Clanet (16 points, 12 rebounds), Evan Busby (13 points) and Clarens Pierre (12 points), scored in double-digits.
This season, Davis & Elkins is averaging 81.5 points per contest and pull down 36.5 rebounds each game. The Senators shoot 45.9-percent, on average, which ranks fourth in the Mountain East Conference. The Senators block four shots per game, which is third best in the MEC and hold opponents to a 43.6-percent field goal percentage, which ranks fourth.
Individually, Sam Rolle leads the conference in assists per game with 5.8 and in minutes per game with 33.9. He ranks third in steals with 2.8 per game and is fourth in the conference with 19 points per game. In Division II, Rolle is fifth in total steals (22), sixth in steals per game (2.8), seventh in assists per game (6) and eighth in total assists (48). Clarens Pierre (7.6) and Vadim Clanet (7.5) are sixth and seventh, respectively, in rebounds per game. Pierre blocks 2.3 shots per game, leading the MEC, and ranking ninth in the country.
Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan got its first win last week, taking down Wheeling by a score of 89-87, in overtime, on Saturday. Earlier in the week, the Bobcats fell to No. 5 West Liberty 121-54.
In the win against Wheeling, Wesleyan shot 51-percent for the game and outscored Wheeling 47-43 in the second half to force overtime. In that second half, the Bobcats shot 68-percent (17-for-25) from the field and 86-percent (6-for-7) from three-point range. Five players scored in double-digits in that game for WVWC, with Tyler Slone leading the way with 21 points and five steals, before fouling out. West Virginia Wesleyan posted season-highs in field goal percentage (.507), three-point percentage (.389), assists (15) and points.
W.Va. Wesleyan is averaging just 63.7 points per game, which is the lowest in the conference by almost seven points and are being outrebounded by about five boards per contest. The Bobcats do rank fourth in steals per game, with 9.86. Darius Green leads the Bobcats, and ranks 10th in the conference, with 16.2 points per game. He leads the MEC with three steals per contest. Tyler Slone ranks second in the conference by shooting 45.7-percent from long range and making three threes per game.
