Blaire Barr's career-high 17 kills and sophomore
Jayme Zoeckler's career-best 48 assists, the Notre Dame College volleyball team (9-14, 3-4 MEC) stole the second set from the University of Charleston (19-3, 6-1 MEC) on Saturday afternoon. However, with the score tied at 1-1, the Golden Eagles took over the match by grabbing the third and fourth sets, to win 3-1.
Charleston used a 6-1 run to grab an early 8-4 lead in the first set. After holding a 15-11 lead, UC went on a 5-0 run to move in front 20-11. The Falcons would respond with a 7-1 run (23-19) at the end of the set, seniors
Kaye Dregalla and Barr generated a pair of kills each. Despite the late run, the Golden Eagles claimed set one, 25-19.
Notre Dame soared to an early second set lead at 11-6 after Barr tallied three more kills. The early lead would be the difference maker in the set as the two sides fought evenly for the remainder of the frame. Sophomore
Samantha Comer punctuated the second stanza for the Falcons, 25-20.
NDC would hold a 5-4 advantage to begin the third set, before UC snagged seven of the next eight points, moving in front 11-6. The Falcons quickly answered with a 5-0 run of their own to tie the contest at 11-11. After Charleston won six of the next eight points, Notre Dame generated 5-1 run to tie the game once more at 18-18. A valiant come from behind effort would fall short as UC stepped up their game, closing out the frame 25-20.
With Charleston leading 10-5 in the fourth set, Notre Dame worked the frame back to a two-point deficit (16-14). However, UC responded with a 5-0 run to go on top, 21-14 before winning 25-17.
The Falcon offense was led by Barr's career-high 17 kills on a blazing .455 hit percentage. Dregalla (15) and Comer (10) contributed to the NDC offense, as Zoeckler tallied a career-high 48 assists while facilitating the attack.
Defensively, sophomore
Kiley Kalina registered a game-high 14 digs, along with fellow sophomore
Grace Smotek's 13. At the net, Barr and freshman
Ryleigh Ronald swatted a game-high three attacks.
Notre Dame College finished with 54 kills on a .254 hit percentage, to go with 51 assists, 47 digs, six blocks and five aces.
The Falcons will be back in action on Tuesday Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. when NDC travels to Davis & Elkins College.
