WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The Mountain East Conference Wrestling Tournament took place on Saturday and Notre Dame College grabbed third place with 111 points, just 6.5 behind second. All nine of the wrestlers who competed for NDC placed in the top five.
Sandro Ramirez earned first place in his weight bracket at 157 lbs. and
Logan Hall won the 184 lbs. bracket.
Ramirez received a bye in the first round and would take down Davis & Elkins' Noah Tarr with a 5-3 decision in the semifinal. He then faced Jamar Williams (Alderson Broaddus) in the final round. Ramirez grabbed an early 3-1 lead and went on to win with another 5-3 decision. Not only did he take First Place, but he was named Most Outstanding Wrestler, becoming the second Falcon to earn the award (
Hunter Bray – 2020).
Hall wrestled three times and moved quickly through the 184 class. He beat West Liberty's Drake Kendrex with a 7-1 decision and then beat Michael Schneider (Davis & Elkins) with an 8-2 decision. The Falcons' senior was able to get some revenge for a loss in a dual on Jan. 20 when he defeated Glenville State's Cole Houser in a close 3-2 bout to take the top spot on the podium.
La'Ron Parks was impressive in the heavyweight division, starting off with a pin of Davis & Elkins' Damier Wilson-Turner in the quarterfinal. In the next round, he beat Glenville State's Gavin Shamblin by decision. In the 1st place match, Parks lost to No. 6 ranked Francesco Borsellino.
At 141 lbs.,
Dylan Burnoski started the Falcons' success of the day in his first-round matchup. In a scoreless bout, Burnoski pinned Richard Davis (Alderson Broaddus) and advanced to the next round. His only loss of the day would come against No. 12 Tyler Warner, of West Liberty, but Burnoski bounced back with a win over Fairmont State's Levi Smith. In the 3rd place match, he grabbed another victory over Davis.
Matthew Kaufmann lost one matchup at 149, a close battle that ended in sudden victory against Glenville State's Gavin Quiocho. Quiocho would go on to finish second in the weight class. Kaufmann pinned Alderson Broaddus' Nate Taylor and then beat West Liberty's Jacob Simpson for third place.
At 165,
Cale Hoskinson had an interesting day on the mat. He lost to Fairmont State's Cade Moisey by decision in the quarterfinal. Hoskinson then received a bye and advanced by injury default. He faced Moisey in the 3rd place match and got revenge with a pin.
Hank Carey also grabbed third place. His only loss was a late fall against No. 3 ranked Ty McGeary in the semifinal. He then left little doubt in the third place match, grabbing a 6-1 lead early in the second period and defeated Brad Galassi with an 11-4 decision.
Thomas Schmitt ran into tough competition, but still grabbed fourth place. He won his first matchup by major decision before losing to No. 7 Gino Sita (Alderson Broaddus). In the consolation semifinal, Schmitt pinned Fairmont State's Jaxson Turner. Against No. 4 ranked Logan Kemp in the 3rd place match, Schmitt was defeated by major decision.
Brett Strandahl grabbed fifth place at 125.
