SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – On a full day of wrestling in the Murphy Gymnasium, Notre Dame College had two tests as they faced Mountain East Conference foes Glenville State College and No. 4 ranked West Liberty University. The Falcons fell by a score of 25-18 against GSC and 32-12 versus WLU.
In their first matchup of the day, Notre Dame grabbed an early 3-0 lead on the Pioneers when Brett Strandahl earned a 10-7 victory at 125 lbs. An NDC scratch at 133 and two Glenville State victories by decision put GSC in front, 12-3.
Notre Dame struck back, beginning with
Sandro Ramirez, who jumped out to a large 9-2 lead and held on for a 10-7 victory over Tristan Pugh, at 157. That gave NDC three points. A GSC forfeit gave Notre Dame six more points to tie the match at 12. Later in the dual,
Michael Viramontes made quick work of Devin Gauldin at 285, winning via pin in the first period.
In the final dual of the day, West Liberty had a 9-0 lead before NDC fought right back to take the lead.
Dylan Burnoski won by decision at 141 and then
Matthew Kaufmann fired up his teammates when he pinned Jacob Simpson with 49 seconds left in the first period. Those two victories tied the score at nine. Ramirez continued to dominate and won his second bout of the day, defeating Blake Miller by decision to put Notre Dame in front, 12-9.
The rest of the way, WLU tied the score and then took the lead as three of the final five wrestlers were ranked in the top 10, nationally.
Notre Dame will compete next at the Mountain East Conference Championships on Jan. 29. Wrestling begins at 10 a.m.
