Notre Dame suffers double overtime defeat to Charleston

Box Score SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – The Notre Dame College women's basketball team (7-7, 6-3 MEC) hosted the University of Charleston (6-5, 4-3 MEC) on Saturday afternoon inside Murphy Gymnasium. The Falcons and Golden Eagles battled down to the wire as double overtime was needed to separate the two sides. UC came out on top 79-72.
 
In the first half, Notre Dame won both the first and second quarters, 16-13 and 15-10 respectively. NDC came out of the gate hot by scoring the games first six points. UC would battle back, including taking the lead, 9-8 at the 4:50 mark. The Falcons closed out the first quarter with the lead and continued their success into the second. At the 2:53 mark in the second, NDC extended their lead to 28-18, their largest of the game to this point. The Falcons would go into the break, up 31-23.
 
In the second half, Alana Ellis scored nine of the Falcons first 11 points as Notre Dame opened up a 42-28 lead, their largest lead of the game. Charleston was again resilient as the Golden Eagles closed out the quarter with three consecutive three-point field goals, followed by a Lilee Carlson and-1, and the NDC lead was cut to six with ten minutes remaining. The fourth quarter saw UC chip away at the NDC lead all period, as the Golden Eagles grabbed their first lead at the 2:45 mark, since they led 11-8 in in the first. Ellis netted a three-pointer with 1:01 remaining to give NDC a 61-59 lead, but UC's Clarissa Francis scored the game-tying basket in the paint as time expired to send the contest to overtime.
 
In overtime, Charleston started out hot by grabbing a six-point lead at the 2:39 mark, their largest lead of the game. Notre Dame would play resilient this time, as Carlson tied the contest at 69-69 after an and-1 with just 21 seconds remaining, sending the game to another overtime period. In the second overtime period, Charleston controlled the pace by outscoring Notre Dame 10-3 during the five minutes, to ultimately win the contest 79-72.
 
Leading the way for Notre Dame was Ellis with a team-high 22 points, followed by Carlson with 20 points and Jen Oduho with 19. In addition, Ellis grabbed a team-high seven boards, followed by Oduho, Tamia Ridley and Theresa Parr all with six.
 
NDC shot 24-72 (33.3%) from the field compared to UC's 28-85 (32.9%). The difference in the game was the rebounding margin as the Golden Eagles nabbed 66 rebounds compared to the Falcons 47. Notre Dame won the turnover battle 13 to 17.
 
Notre Dame College will be back in action on Monday Jan. 17 at 5:30 p.m. when the Falcons will travel to meet the Fairmont State Falcons in a contest that was previously scheduled for Jan. 5 but was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols.
