Green named women's basketball assistant coach

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College women's basketball head coach Imani Gordon has announced the hiring of Chanel Green as assistant coach. Green has quickly accumulated coaching experience at the collegiate level with stops at NCAA Division I and Division III schools.

"I am so excited for Chanel to get here and get going," Gordon said. "From our first conversation we connected, not only on a basketball level, but a personal level. Not only did I enjoy getting to know her, but the team really enjoyed getting to know her as well. Chanel will bring experience and a championship caliber to NDC. She will come in and make an immediate impact on our program. When you are creating your staff, you want people who will come in and bring a variety of things to the table, and that she does."

As an assistant coach last season at the University of Detroit Mercy, Green worked with the guards as their position coach and conducted player development. She supervised the team's budget, the travel responsibilities and coordinated academic meetings.

Prior to Detroit Mercy, Green was the Director of Basketball Operations at The College of William & Mary. There, she managed the budget for the women's basketball program and coordinated travel. William & Mary put together a 21-8 record in the 2019-20 season, including a 12-6 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. They were set to be the three seed in the conference tournament before it was canceled due to COVID-19.

Her first stop in the college ranks came at Oberlin College in the 2018-19 campaign, where she was an assistant coach responsible for player development and leading guard workouts. In addition to working with the guards, Green oversaw the team's speed and agility workouts. That season, Oberlin women's basketball had an overall record of 15-11, with a 10-6 conference record, earning a spot in the North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament.

"I want to thank Coach Gordon for the opportunity and trusting me in this role," Green said. "I feel so welcomed here at NDC, I am excited to start our journey. NDC is such a great school and I am thankful to be a part of this team. Being amongst a championship caliber team and staff is truly a blessing. I feel confident that I can make a significant contribution to this program. I plan on bringing my championship experience and mentality to continue to make NDC women's basketball a successful program on and off the court."

As a student-athlete, Green played basketball at East Carolina University and Hampton University. She was a team captain and helped Hampton win a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament Championship in the 2016-17 season. The Pirates earned a bid to the NCAA Division I Tournament that season. Academically, she was named MEAC Commissioner's All-Academic in 2016 and 2017 and made the Dean's List in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Green graduated from Hampton University with a Bachelor of Arts, Strategic Communication and a Master of Science, Sports Administration.

"Chanel brings experience from almost every level; high school, D3 and D1," Gordon mentioned. "She played Division I basketball, like myself, and she understands the high expectations and standards required from these student-athletes in order for them to be successful on and off the court. She will be able to not only guide our guards, but the entire team to always have a championship mentality in everything we do and face. I am super excited to get to work."
