SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Entering Saturday's contest with Davis & Elkins College, Notre Dame College had won three straight games and had grabbed the lead first in each of those three wins. The matchup with the Senators was no different, as the Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 advantage and held onto that lead for a 14-9 victory.
"We had a good start to the game and had to fight to finish strong," said head coach
Ben Morhac.
NDC and D&E both entered the day undefeated in Mountain East Conference play at 3-0. The Falcons were aggressive early, winning the opening draw control and taking three quick shots, including two shots on goal.
The Falcons' defense caused two turnovers in the first three minutes, and the second caused turnover led to a goal by graduate student
Amanda Paino with 27:11 to go in the first half.
Junior
Ebony Reddick scored her first goal of the game with 22:40 on the clock, giving Notre Dame a 2-0 lead. Reddick scored six of NDC's 10 first half goals and finished the game with seven, a career-high.
Davis and Elkins closed the gap to two goals, 5-3, with 12:11 to go before halftime, but Notre Dame responded with a goal by senior
Selena Carter and back-to-back scores by Reddick.
NDC led 10-5 at halftime. The Falcons attempted 25 shots in the first 30 minutes, and 15 of those shots were on goal.
The Senators scored three times in the first 12 minutes of the second half, to pull within three, 11-8. However, from the 12:21-mark until the 7:31-mark in the second stanza, NDC put together a 3-0 run and led 14-8 after a free position shot and goal from sophomore
Kendal Johnson.
"They [Davis & Elkins] have a very strong goalie that kept them in the game, but our draw team is what made the difference today," Morhac said. "Excited for the win, but it's on to the next one."
Along with her seven goals, Reddick totaled eight groundballs, seven draw controls and caused four turnovers. Paino added three goals and two caused turnovers. Johnson had two goals and an assist. Both freshman
Charlotte Vari and Carter had one goal. Junior
Katie Wendell caused three turnovers and goalkeeper
Mackenzie Levine had five saves.
The Falcons took 40 shots in the game and won 17 draw controls.
