BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – After scoring 14 goals in the first half against West Virginia Wesleyan College, Notre Dame College's offense added 10 in the second half and the defense shutout WVWC over the final 30 minutes. NDC won by a score of 24-2.
NDC caused turnovers throughout the first half, which led to goals. After an early turnover, sophomore
Alicyn Loberg worked to get the ball back and did cause a turnover, which led to senior
Emily Thomson scoring the first goal of the day, with an assist by freshman
Charlotte Vari. With Notre Dame leading 2-0, sophomore
Nia Griffith caused a turnover, leading to another goal using the Vari-to-Thompson connection, with 24:33 on the clock.
West Virginia Wesleyan turned the ball over 11 times in the first half. Notre Dame was able to score following six of them.
Notre Dame scored four times in the final five minutes of the first half. The final three goals of the half came after NDC won the draw control, and the Falcons' offense was efficient as they marched toward the WVWC goal.
At halftime, the Falcons led 14-2. Senior
Selena Carter had five goals in the first half, which was already a career-high. Vari added three goals and three assists.
Graduate student
Amanda Paino would score four times in the second half and add an assist. She passed to junior
Katie Wendell, who scored the first goal of the second half, and then Paino scored two of the next three goals, herself.
Junior
Megan Dano tallied three assists and a goal in the second half. She totaled a season-high five assists in the game.
Carter finished with seven goals and converted on all three free position shots. Vari totaled a career-high five goals and three assists. Wendell tied a career-high by winning eight draw controls and she recorded a career-high five caused turnovers. Loberg scored two goals and tied a career-high with nine draw controls. Junior
Mackenzie Levine saved six shots in the game, including five in the second half.
Notre Dame's 24 goal output is tied for second in program history, and is the highest total since 2013. Their number of points in the game (34) is ranked third in program history and the assist number (10) is tied for sixth most in NDC history. The Falcons' 21 draw controls today is tied for the second highest number this season, but it is still tied for sixth in program history.
"We played a very complete game and everyone played a big role in the win," said head coach
Ben Morhac. "I'm extremely proud of how well we played as a team today."
Notre Dame heads to Davis & Elkins College on April 17. That game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
