Lacrosse defeats Davis & Elkins, moves back into first place

ELKINS, W.Va. – Davis & Elkins College came within two goals of Notre Dame College in the second half, but a 3-0 run put the Falcons up 10-5 and NDC finished the season sweep with an 11-7 victory, on Saturday.

The Falcons wasted little time at the beginning of the game when junior Katie Wendell won the opening draw control and sophomore Alicyn Loberg scored 39 seconds into the game. Junior Megan Dano was credited with the assist.

NDC would grab a 3-0 advantage after graduate student Amanda Paino scored back-to-back goals within the span of a minute. After scoring her first goal of the day, Paino won the draw control prior to her second goal.

Davis & Elkins scored their first goal of the contest with 18:07 on the first half clock when Angelina Horan scored on a free position shot.

Notre Dame pushed their lead to four, 5-1, as Wendell scored and then assisted on a goal scored by Paino.

On the other side of the field, junior goalkeeper Mackenzie Levine had already saved seven shots with 5:20 remaining in the first half.

At halftime, NDC led 7-4. Paino had three goals, Dano had three assists and freshman Charlotte Vari had a goal and an assist.

Horan scored early in the second half and D&E trailed by just two goals, 7-5. That's when the Falcons swung the momentum in the other direction. Following another save by Levine, Vari found Paino for a goal.

The Senators turned the ball over and with 22:38 remaining, Dano scored off an assist by Vari. The ball switched possessions several times before Notre Dame expanded their lead to five, 10-5, when Dano scored at the 11:01-mark.

Horan scored again for Davis & Elkins, and less than a minute later, Emily Smith scored on a free position shot with 9:31 on the clock, making the score 10-7.

Vari put the final goal of the day in the back of the net for the Falcons off an assist from Loberg.

"We pulled out a gritty win today to take back first place in conference," said head coach Ben Morhac. "We had good ball movement and really great one-v-one defense, on top of timely saves from Kenz [Levine]. Proud of what this team is accomplishing this season."

Paino led NDC with four goals. Dano and Vari added two goals and three assists, each. Wendell scored two goals, had an assist and won two draw controls. Loberg recorded a goal, an assist and won two draw controls. Levine saved 12 shots throughout the game.

Notre Dame holds sole possession of first place in the Mountain East Conference after Frostburg State University lost to the University of Charleston today.

The Falcons will travel to play Charleston on April 22. That game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
