FAIRMONT, W.Va. – In the Mountain East Conference Tournament Quarterfinals, Notre Dame College went up against Fairmont State University, the top seed in the North Division. NDC took the first set, but Fairmont State won the match, 3-1.
Notre Dame put together a solid first set, posting a .243 hit percentage. The two teams exchanged the lead five times, but Notre Dame pulled ahead late. The NDC Falcons were able to take an 18-15 lead following kills from sophomore
Kaye Dregalla, sophomore
Sarah DeGeorge and freshman
McKenzie Andrix. FSU came within one, but NDC slammed the door with four consecutive points to take a 23-18 advantage. They would win the set by a score of 25-21.
Freshman
Kelsie Palmer led the way with five kills. She also had a hit percentage of .625. DeGeorge added three kills and six digs. Junior
Amelia Kaeberlein had seven digs in the first set and Andrix had nine assists.
In set two, Fairmont State jumped out to a 9-3 lead and were hitting .714, for the set. Later, NDC fought back with a 5-1 run to cut the deficit to seven points and force Fairmont State to take a timeout. FSU finished the set with a 25-15 win.
The third set featured 10 ties and neither team could grab a lead larger than four points. Throughout the set, Dregalla and DeGeorge each totaled four kills. Fairmont State closed out the set with a 4-0 run to win, 25-22.
"Tonight, we started out strong, but Fairmont made adjustments that we didn't respond well to," head coach
Travis Hinkle said. "This match will give us a lot to work on in the offseason and I'm so proud of the girls to fight through a delayed season filled with uncertainty. I'm very excited for the future and can't wait to get back in the gym in a few weeks."
Palmer totaled five kills in the both the first and second set and finished the night with 14 kills, while both DeGeorge and Dregalla had nine. Andrix set another career-high with 27 assists in the match. Kaeberlein ended the match with 18 digs.
Kaeberlein is currently fifth in the NCAA Division II rankings for the season in total digs and eighth in digs per set.
