SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – Notre Dame College had nine players score at least one goal and the Falcons stayed undefeated in Mountain East Conference play as they beat the University of Charleston by a score of 13-8, on Wednesday.
After junior
Katie Wendell won the first draw control, NDC quickly worked their way down the field and freshman
Charlotte Vari scored the first goal of the contest at the 29:20-mark. The Falcons continued to take aim at the Charleston goal, taking four shots over the next two minutes.
A shot by graduate student
Amanda Paino was saved by UC goalkeeper Georgia Ryan, but junior
Ebony Reddick grabbed the groundball and scored, putting the ball into the net with 27:18 to go in the first half.
NDC then put two more goals on the scoreboard, quickly, following draw controls by Reddick. Freshman Meghan Jackson scored, with an assist by senior
Emily Thomson, and then Paino gave the Falcons a 4-0 lead with 25:53 on the clock. That led to a timeout by the Golden Eagles.
"I feel really good about all that we've been doing," Paino said after the game. "We're always making progress and we look forward to every game to get better and to improving ourselves. I think we're going really strong and we're only going to get better from here."
Charleston scored their first goal on a free position shot, but then Notre Dame scored three consecutive goals.
As the game approached nine minutes remaining in the first half, a goal by Thomson put the Falcons in front, 8-2. However, that would be the last goal scored by NDC before the halftime break.
After 30 minutes, Notre Dame led 8-4. The Falcons won five more draw controls than Charleston, which led to many of their goals early in the half.
After scoring the final two goals of the first half, Charleston continued their run. After getting a couple saves from Georgia Ryan, UC's Elishia Davis scored and then McKenna Kincaid put back-to-back goals on the scoreboard. With 20:45 remaining in the game, Charleston trailed by one goal, 8-7.
The Golden Eagles had two chances to tie the game, but NDC's goalkeeper
Mackenzie Levine made two big stops. The Falcons' senior
Selena Carter and Jackson both scored on free position shots to push the lead to three goals.
NDC closed out the game with a 3-0 run in the final 4:01 of the game.
"It's nice to continue to see us spread out the scoring," said head coach
Ben Morhac. "We will always take a win, especially a conference win, but we still have some things we need to work on to take on the rest of our schedule."
Sophomore
Kendal Johnson led the team with three goals, to go along with two assists. Paino and Jackson each had two goals. Thomson scored her first goal of the season and had a season-high two assists. Reddick and sophomore
Alicyn Loberg each won seven draw controls. Reddick also caused a season-high four turnovers and Levine stopped 12 Charleston shots.
Notre Dame will host Davis & Elkins College on April 3. The contest is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
