Lacrosse improves to 2-0 in conference play with win over Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, Md. – For the first time since the 2014 season, Notre Dame College has scored over 20 goals in back-to-back games. On Saturday, the Falcons defeated Frostburg State University by a score of 21-15.

Both teams were threatening early, and Frostburg's Summer Cavey took a free position shot that was saved by NDC goalkeeper Mackenzie Levine. The Falcons took the ball the other way and sophomore Alicyn Loberg passed to graduate student Amanda Paino in front of the goal. Paino took a quick shot and scored the first goal of the contest.

Sophomore Kendal Johnson scored the second goal on a free position shot and then assisted on the third goal. Johnson was behind the net and passed to freshman Megan Jackson, who scored.

The Bobcats went on a 3-1 run and trailed by one goal, 4-3, with 18:07 on the clock, but the Falcons responded with three straight goals. The first goal of the NDC scoring run featured another assist from Loberg. This time, Loberg found junior Megan Dano who was cutting toward the goal.

A 3-0 run by FSU, late in the first half, brought the Bobcats within one goal, 8-7, with 1:25 remaining in the half. Johnson scored the final goal of the first half, with an assist credited to junior Ebony Reddick.

Coming out of the halftime break, Paino caused a turnover and Johnson sent the ball up to the field to freshman Charlotte Vari who scored. NDC scored the first four goals of the second half to take a 13-7 advantage.

With 21:53 to go in the second half, Reddick took a free position shot that was saved, but the ball rolled away. Reddick scooped up the groundball and scored the goal, making the score, 14-8.
The Falcons pushed the lead to seven goals, 20-13, when Vari scored again, off an assist by Dano with 10:14 remaining.

"It was a hard-fought battle today and both teams gave everything they had," said head coach Ben Morhac. "We have more people getting on the score sheet and players gaining confidence each game. We are definitely heading in the right direction and we are looking forward to hosting Charleston on Wednesday."

With their win today, NDC wins their first two conference games for the first time since joining the Mountain East Conference in 2015. Paino and Johnson each scored five goals. Reddick added three goals and won nine draw controls, which set a career-high and tied her for second most in a game in program history.

Johnson, Reddick and Loberg all had two assists. Junior Katie Wendell and Vari both scored twice. Senior Sydney DeCamp caused three turnovers and Levine recorded 12 saves.

The Falcons won 22 draw controls, which is tied for third most in a game in program history.

NDC will come home to play the University of Charleston on March 31. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
