SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – With a 23-3 win over West Virginia Wesleyan College on Wednesday, Notre Dame College starts conference play 1-0 and improves to 2-0 at home.
Amanda Paino and
Alicyn Loberg combined for 13 goals for NDC.
Notre Dame started the offense early in the game, scoring a man-down goal with 28:37 on the clock, as freshman
Charlotte Vari found the back of the net. Graduate student
Amanda Paino scored her first goal with 27:07 to go.
Paino scored six goals in the first half of the contest and finished with eight, which is tied for the second highest number of goals scored in a game in program history.
Following West Virginia Wesleyan's first goal of the day, Paino scored back-to-back in less than a minute, giving NDC a 4-1 lead.
The Bobcats put a second goal on the board with 18:52 on the first half clock, with a free position shot by Victoria Sisson. That goal cut the deficit to four, 6-2, but the Falcons scored the final nine goals of the half and led 15-2 at the break.
During the 9-0 run, Paino scored three times, senior
Selena Carter and sophomore
Alicyn Loberg both scored twice. Sophomore
Kendal Johnson and freshman
Megan Jackson each added one goal. Jackson's was the first of her career.
Notre Dame took 25 shots in the first half, with WVWC taking just six.
After an early NDC shot and a save by the Bobcats' goalkeeper Caelainn Morrison, the Falcons got the ball back on a turnover that was caused by Johnson. That led to a goal by junior
Ebony Reddick with an assist by senior
Emily Thomson.
The Falcons scored three goals in the first six minutes of the second stanza and scored all eight of their second half goals before WVWC put the ball into the net later in the game.
Paino, Loberg and Reddick all scored two goals in the final 30 minutes. Senior
Bridie Schmalz added a goal with 7:25 on the clock and Carter made the score 23-2 with her goal at the 5:31-mark. The Falcons' 23 goals ranks third in program history for a single game.
"It was a good bounce-back game for us and a great way to start conference play," said head coach
Ben Morhac. "We still have some mistakes to fix, but getting that many players on the stat sheet is always great."
Loberg ended the game with five goals, nine draw controls and eight ground balls, all career-highs. Her nine draw controls are tied for second most in a single game in program history. NDC's 21 draw controls is tied for fifth in program history for a single game. Reddick had three goals and finished with eight draw controls, which tied a career-high.
Johnson added a career-high two assists to go along with one goal. She tied a career-high with four ground balls. Carter also scored three times in the contest, which were her first goals since April 25, 2019.
Notre Dame will travel to Frostburg State University on March 27. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
