Women's basketball to battle two MEC opponents before traveling to Bowling Green this week

This week: The Notre Dame College women's basketball team will begin their week by playing host to Davis & Elkins College on Wednesday Dec. 8 at 5:30 p.m. The Falcons will then travel to Buckhannon, WV to play West Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. NDC will round out their week on Sunday Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. when they travel to Division I Bowling Green State University for a non-conference bout.

Records: Notre Dame begins the week at 4-4 (3-1 MEC), while Davis & Elkins is currently 1-6 (0-4 MEC), West Virginia Wesleyan sits at 2-4 (1-3 MEC), while Bowling Green is 2-4.

Coaches Corner: Imani Gordon is at the helm of the Notre Dame women's basketball program in her first season. Gordon was named head coach back in April after serving as an assistant with NDC since the 2017-18 season. Rachel Swartz is in her second season with Davis & Elkins College and holds a career record of 3-19. Brett Vincent is in his first season as head coach of the West Virginia Wesleyan program. Robyn Fralick is the head coach of Bowling Green in her fourth season with a career record of 40-50.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Poll.

Series History: NDC is 3-0 all-time when facing D&E, dating back to 2019-20. The Falcons are 15-1 when playing WVWC historically, dating back to 2013-14. Sunday will mark the first ever meeting between the NDC Falcons and the Division I BGSU Falcons.

Noting the NDC Falcons: Notre Dame is coming off a 1-1 week with a 116-51 loss to No. 9 Glenville State on Wednesday, and a bounce back 82-78 win in double overtime over Concord on Saturday. On Wednesday, NDC couldn't seem to get much going as Lilee Carlson and Alana Ellis paced the Falcons with ten points each as Notre Dame shot 15-53 (28.3%) from the field during the game. On Friday, the Falcons rebounded with a gritty double overtime win on the home court. Jen Oduho led NDC with 20 points, followed by Tamia Ridley with a season-high 16, Ellis with 14 and Amil Ali-Shakir with 13. However, there were no Falcon points more important than Marina Adachi's game-tying three-pointer in the final seconds of the first overtime period that extended the game five more minutes, allowing NDC to come out on top. In addition, Ridley hustled for 15 rebounds to grab her second double-double performance of the season, as Ali-Shakir snared a season-high nine boards to allow the Falcons to outrebound the Mountain Lions 48-39.

Notre Dame currently touts four scorers averaging double figures this season, led by Ellis who posts 16.9 points per game (ppg). Oduho (14.8 ppg), Jada Marone (11.3 ppg) and Carlson (10.5 ppg) are the other three Falcons in double figures on the season. Stacking up against the Mountain East Conference, Ellis is currently ranked fourth and Oduho comes in at 12th in ppg.
In terms of rebounding, Ridley is the dominating force for this NDC Falcons team as she is the only player to generate double digit rebounds at 11.0 rebounds per game (rpg). The senior ranks second in the MEC in rpg and she is only one of four players in the conference to post double figures in the category.

Oduho boasts the top free throw percentage in the conference at 90.2% (37-41).

On average for the season, Notre Dame is averaging 69.0 ppg on 37.5% shooting, while NDC is allowing 81.4 ppg on 46.3% shooting. In terms of rebounding, the Falcons have been out-rebounded by 7.1 rpg.

Noting the Senators: Davis & Elkins College enters this week on a five-game losing streak after dropping their two most recent contests last week. On Wednesday, D&E fell to Wheeling at home 82-54 with Dream Cherry leading all scorers during the game with 16 points. On Saturday, D&E was blown out again 90-50 by West Liberty, as Cherry posted a team-high 14 points. The Senators have now lost by double digits in all four of their Mountain East Conference games.

The aforementioned Cherry is the leading scorer on the season for D&E at 17.0 ppg. The freshman is currently tied for second in the conference in ppg as she has totaled double figures in every game this season. Marissa Berlin is the only other Senator to see double-digits as she averages a double-double at 10.0 ppg and 10.6 rpg.

On average for the season, Davis & Elkins scores 61.3 ppg on 36.3% shooting from the floor, while D&E surrenders 78.3 ppg on 43.2% shooting. The Senators are also being out-rebounded by an average of 3.7 boards per game.

Noting the Bobcats: West Virginia Wesleyan begins this week on a three-game skid after dropping both of their games last week. On Wednesday, WVWC lost 70-44 at home to West Liberty with Symphonie Bryant-Brown leading all scorers at 20 points. On Saturday, the Bobcats had their hearts broken after a 52-51 loss to Wheeling when WU's Shamia Strayhorn sunk a half court shot as time expired to seal the fate for the WVWC faithful. Imani Jackson paced the Bobcats with 15 points during the contest.

West Virginia Wesleyan is led on offense by Brown-Bryant who scores at 15 ppg this season, as the freshman sits at tenth in the MEC in ppg. Courtney Wilfong (10.7 ppg) and Jackson (10.5 ppg) also add double-digit scoring for the Bobcats offensively.

On average for the season, Wesleyan scores 63.5 ppg on 36.6% shooting while allowing 72.5 ppg on 39.1% shooting from the field. However, the Bobcats out-rebound their opponents by an average of 3.6 rpg.

Noting the BGSU Falcons: Bowling Green played just one game last week when they defeated Valparaiso 69-53 at home. Amy Velasco and Morgan Sharps led all scorers with a game-high 17 points each as the only BGSU Falcons in double figures. Velasco shot an efficient 8-11 from the field as Sharps was an effective 5-7 from three-point land.

Bowling Green is led by Sharps on the offensive end as she has been a knockdown three-point shooter at 51.3% (20-39) on the season, a mark that ranks sixth in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The sophomore is also BG's leading scorer at 14.0 ppg which is 15th in the MAC. Zoe Miller is the only other double-digit scorer for BGSU at 10.5 ppg.

On average for the season, Bowling Green is scoring and allowing exactly 71.5 ppg. The BGSU Falcons shoot the ball at 44.9%, while allowing opponents to shoot 44.3%. BG has been out-rebounded by an average of 3.7 rpg.
