PAINESVILLE, Ohio – Notre Dame College wrestling traveled a few miles to the east and participated in the Storm Open, hosted by Lake Erie College. Sophomore
Michael Viramontes took first place, freshman
Cale Hoskinson and sophomore
La'Ron Parks both placed second and sophomore
Matthew Kaufmann grabbed sixth place.
At 285 lbs., Viramontes defeated Wheeling's Claoury Meca by decision (4-1) and then took down Lake Erie's Ronnie D'Amico by decision (3-2), to advance to the semifinals. A forfeit gave Viramontes a spot in the First Place Match against his teammate Laron Parks, who was wrestling unattached. Viramontes finished the day with the top spot after pinning Parks at the 5:40-mark.
Parks' day began in the quarterfinals after a bye in round one. At 285, the Falcons' sophomore defeated Hogan Swenski (Ohio State) by 7-2 decision and then beat Gannon's Gehrig Hutchison with a 10-4 decision. Parks took second place.
At 165, Hoskinson was victorious in a 7-0 decision over Deven Abbott (Gannon) and with a 7-1 decision over Cade Moisey (Fairmont State). Following a medical forfeit, Hoskinson was in the First Place Match against Jay Nivison. In an incredibly tight battle, Nivison came out on top with a 4-2 decision.
Following a victory against Michigan State's Brock Holek (Decision 7-0), Kaufmann entered the quarterfinal at 149. Kaufmann lost by decision to Lake Erie's Sean O'Hearon, but bounced back in a big way as he finished off a matchup against Jaycob Sharp (Lake Erie), with a 19-0 tech fall. In another close match, Kaufmann took sixth place after he lost to Kaleb Burgess, in a 2-0 decision.
At 184,
Logan Hall's only loss of the day came against Ohio State's Rocky Jordan. He then won by tech fall against Ohio's Scott Schlett, pinned teammate
Nick McCarthy and won by tech fall over Lake Erie's Vincent Scaramuzzio.
Thomas Schmitt wrestled his way back through the consolation bracket at 174 and defeated Bryson Alsteen of the Bulls Wrestling Club, as well as, Chance Morgan of West Liberty. Both NDC grapplers took first in their consolation bracket.
The Falcons will travel to Cleveland State University for the Cleveland State Open on Dec. 11.
