Men’s basketball plays two conference games this week and hosts Lourdes next Monday

This week: Notre Dame College men's basketball will travel to play Glenville State College on Wednesday, Dec. 1, with a start time of 7:30 p.m. NDC will host Concord University on Dec. 4, and that contest has a scheduled tip-off time of 4 p.m. The Falcons have a quick turnaround as they welcome Lourdes University to Murphy Gymnasium on Dec. 6. That game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
 
Records: Notre Dame has a 4-0 record, overall, and they are one of just three teams in the Mountain East Conference with an undefeated record in conference play (2-0). Glenville State enters the week with a 2-2 mark, starting 0-1 in the MEC. Concord now has a record of 3-4 (1-1 MEC). Lourdes will play twice this week before visiting South Euclid, and they currently hold a 5-2 record and they are 2-2 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference of NAIA.
 
Coaches Corner: Mark Richmond is in his third season as the head coach of the Falcons. He has an overall record of 21-29 and has gone 17-23 in conference play. Justin Caldwell is in his fourth season as head coach at Glenville State he has a record of 36-38, overall, and 25-31 in the MEC. Todd May is now in his sixth season at the helm of the Concord program. He has put together a record of 72-70 with a 50-53 mark in MEC play. Dennis Hopson enters his third season on the sideline for Lourdes. He holds a record of 34-19.

Rankings: None of these teams are ranked in the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II Top 25 Poll.
 
Series History: Notre Dame is 8-8 all-time against Glenville State, since the two teams first met in the 2013-14 season. The Falcons are 9-8 against Concord since 2013-14. NDC has never played Lourdes.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame has had time to rest, playing just two games over the past two weeks. In those two games, they picked up two conference wins. On Nov. 20, NDC used a running jumper from Jaedon Willis with four seconds remaining, to defeat Wheeling 71-69. Willis led the team with 24 points and five assists. The Falcons then defeated West Liberty, ranked No. 7 in the NABC top 25, by a score of 82-81. That win marked the Falcons' fifth victory against a top 25 ranked team since joining NCAA Division II in the 2012-13 campaign. Tyland Crawford led the team with 21 points on 8-of-12 shooting and was named MEC Player of the Week. Michael Sampson also picked up a double-double (11 points, 15 rebounds) and shot 5-of-6 from the floor. The Falcons shot 50-percent, overall, and 50-percent from three. They limited West Liberty to 44-percent shooting and just 34 second half points.

Jaedon Willis is leading the Falcons by scoring 21.8 points per contest and 4.3 assists per game. He is third in the conference in scoring, third with a 2.8 assist-to-turnover ratio and fifth in three-point percentage (42-percent). Tyland Crawford is not far behind, averaging nearly 16 points, while shooting 53-percent from the field and 53-percent from long range. Crawford has the sixth best field goal percentage in the conference. Michael Sampson scores 12 points per game and shoots 68-percent. He is second in the MEC with 9.5 rebounds per game, third with 3.5 offensive rebounds per game and fourth with six defensive rebounds per contest.

The team leads all of NCAA Division II in three-point percentage (46.5). They are second in the MEC with 86.3 points per game, second in field goal percentage (50.4), third in assist-to-turnover margin (1.06), third in assists per game (16.5) and fifth in free throw percentage (73.3).

Noting the Pioneers: Glenville State is one of two teams in the MEC that has played only one conference game so far. After putting together a solid 9-4 season last year, the Pioneers were picked to finish fifth, in the MEC preseason poll. Their two wins this season have come against St. Augustine's University, on Nov. 12 and Nov. 26. Last week, in addition to their 103-96 victory over SAU, the Pioneers fell to the University of Charleston, 81-62. Nick Edwards was the only player to reach double-digit scoring for GSC. He scored 15 points, on 5-of-11 shooting, and totaled five assists. The Pioneers went 5-for-15 at the free throw line.

In the national rankings in Division II, GSC's John Williams ranks 11th with 24.5 points per contest and Adrian Scarborough is 11th in the country by averaging 4.25 offensive rebounds per game. Nick Edwards ranks 15th with 6.2 assists per game. Along with leading the MEC in scoring, Williams is fifth in the conference in field goal percentage, shooting 53.7-percent. Tommy Williams leads the MEC by shooting 50-percent from beyond the three-point arc. Nick Edwards is also fifth in the conference with 2.5 steals per contest.

The Pioneers are fourth in the conference, scoring 85.3 points per game, third in field goal percentage (47.6) and fourth in three-point percentage (35.2).

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord has had a busy week. They played in the Gary Miller Classic, on Nov. 26 and 27. After falling to Saint Michael's, 92-80, CU bounced back with a 90-69 victory over D'Youville, on Saturday. Just two days later, they jumped back into MEC play and picked up a significant overtime win at home against West Virginia State, 81-79. Concord had the lead for the majority of the game, but West Virginia State took over with about eight minutes remaining in the contest and held a five-point lead with 1:40 on the clock. WVSU could not score in the final 1:40 of the game, and Concord's Lual Rahama made a layup and would later steal the ball, which led to the game-tying three by Ethan Heller. Concord led 81-79 with 46 second remaining in overtime, but neither team put any more points on the board and WVSU missed two free throws with four seconds remaining.

In Division II ranks, Matt Weir ranks second in total assists (47) and eighth in assists per game (6.7). Lual Rahama is 11th in field goals made (52). In the MEC stats, Rahama ranks eighth in the conference with 17.9 points per game. Da'Vion Moore is ninth in the conference with his 5.7 rebounds per contest. Moore also blocks 1.9 shots per contest, which leads all players in the MEC. Matt Weir (3rd – 42.9) and Ethan Heller (6th – 38.3) are in the top eight in the conference in three point field goal percentage.

Concord ranks sixth in the country in threes made with 80, ninth in total assists with 126, 12th in total rebounds with 281, 12th three-pointers made per game at 11.4 and 16th in three-point defense, holding teams to 26.3-percent long range shooting. In the MEC, Concord is behind only Fairmont State in rebounds per game (40.1).

Noting the Gray Wolves: Lourdes played just one game last week, defeating Northwestern Ohio on Nov. 23, 94-69. The Gray Wolves scored 50 points and shot 55-percent in the first half of the contest. LU had 39 points off of their bench as Jackie Harris (22 points, six three-pointers) and Little Anderson (14) combined for 36 of those points. Nick Welch had 13 points and 13 rebounds and Joey Holifield added 21 points.

Joey Holifield leads the team with 19.1 points per game, while Nick Welch averages a double-double with 12.7 points and 10.3 rebounds. McRay White is also a presence in the paint as he averages 12.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per contest.

Lourdes is averaging 94.6 points per game, on 51.4-percent shooting, while holding opponents to 69.9 points, on average. They've also out-rebounded the competition, 312-218.
