FINDLAY, Ohio – Notre Dame College traveled to the University of Findlay on Saturday for the Findlay Open. This was third open that NDC has competed in this season.
Darese Sparkman took third at 149 lbs. and
La'Ron Parks took fifth place at 285.
Sparkman finished the day with a record of 5-1. He started strong by defeating Donovan Bukaczeski (Gannon) with a 19-3 tech fall. In round two, he defeated Mercyhurst's Matt Ferraro (5-2 decision) and West Liberty's Carter Winegardner (7-5 decision). His only loss of the day was in semifinals when he battled No. 4 ranked Carson Speelman, of Ashland. The Eagles' grappler won with a 4-1 decision. Sparkman would bounce back and advanced to the third-place match, where he defeated Central Michigan's Mitchel Christensen, 5-3.
In the heavyweight division,
La'Ron Parks took fifth place after going 6-2. A hard-fought bout in round one ended with Parks defeating Eli Reese (Gannon), 14-12. Parks lost to Michigan's Keegan Nugent, but he then won his next four matchups. In consolation round five, the sophomore defeated Dzhabrail Khurshidov, of Michigan, by major decision (12-4).
At 174, freshman
Parker Moore pinned Gannon's Nico Marsico. Moore had two wins on the day.
Notre Dame will face Ohio State University, on Nov. 23, in Columbus. The dual is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and will be broadcasted on BTN+.
