Swimming & Diving foreshadows promising season after strong showing last weekend

SOUTH EUCLID, OH – The Notre Dame College swimming and diving teams had a busy weekend when they hosted Salem University on Friday evening and then the College of Wooster on Saturday afternoon. Friday featured a Falcons victory from both the men's (149-113) and women's (160-101) side.

Against Salem, Emily Thomas, Jaybreona Foster, Hannah Berlin and Brooke Dobrzanski opened up the meet with a win and 11 points for NDC with a 1:56.82 in the 200-yard medley relay. Abram Hagedorn, Austin Arnold, Jake Dorn and Roan Kelleher followed suit with a 1:39.05 in the same event to grab 11 points for the men's side.

Berlin, wasted no time and claimed another first place finish in the next event. She swam a 11:04.06 in the 1000-yard free to tally nine more Falcon points. Berlin's time was over 70 seconds faster than the next competitor.

Arnold snagged another first place for NDC by narrowly edging out Salem's Greg Smith by .04 second, with a 29.00 in the 50 back. Alexis Torosian swam the 100 fly in the very next event and she also narrowly beat Salem's Sofia Castillo by .65 seconds, to grab first place with a time of 1:03.25.

Notre Dame rounded out the meet with two more first places in the 400-yard free relays to total wins in all four relays on the day for NDC. The relay of Dobrzanski, Berlin, Alaina Wittum, and Torosian bested Salem by two seconds (3:54.79), while the relay of Dorn, Hagedorn, Garrett Warren, and Kelleher won by four seconds (3:22.83).

"Wow, what an incredible meet!" proclaimed Head Coach Stephanie Gyurke, "It was great to see the swimmers step up to such a tough opponent and come out victorious. What I loved even more was seeing all of the technique work we have been working on start to come out in their races."

On Saturday, the College of Wooster posed as tougher competition for NDC as the Fighting Scots won on both sides by a score of 149-112 for the women and 137.5-124.5 for the men.

Notre Dame's Hagedorn, Arnold, Warren, and Kelleher won the first men's event in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:38.78, a second and a half quicker than Wooster.

In addition, Abrielle Junge and Thomas picked up wins in the next two women's events. Junge bested Emma Connors of Wooster by two seconds (2:02.82), while Thomas earned a first in the 100-yard backstroke at time of 1:02.90.

Kelleher then swam strong in back-to-back men's events to grab 18 total points for NDC by posting first place finishes in the 50 (22.40) and 100-yard freestyles (56.92).

It was a great ending to the weekend for Notre Dame as the women's side of Berlin, Wittum, Torosian and Junge beat Wooster by over eight seconds in the 400-yard free relay (3:47.97). The men's 400-yard free relay was the final event of the weekend and it did not disappoint. The Falcons team of Hagedorn, Lorcin Kelleher, Danny Gutzwiler and R. Kelleher would tie the Fighting Scots at a time of 3:19.25 and each earn 7.5 total points.

"I think the last event for the men sums up this meet quite well. It was a battle to the end." said Gyurke, "In previous years the women nor the men have never been this close in a meet with them. I am so proud of all of them and the way they stepped up and found a way to go fast even when they felt exhausted. If this weekend is any indication of what is to come this year, we are in for one heck of a ride."
