Institute, WV – The Notre Dame College volleyball team (12-9, 3-3 MEC) traveled to West Virginia State University (18-2, 7-0 MEC) for a Friday evening MEC showdown. The Yellow Jackets defended home court and bested the Falcons 3-0.
In the first set, the Falcons and Yellow Jackets dueled back and forth to 15-13 West Virginia State. However, WVSU snagged ten of the last 13 points to win 25-17. Notre Dame came out flat in the second set by surrendering the first nine points of the set, digging themselves into a massive hole. WVSU would resoundingly win the second set 25-12. The third set started similar to the last as WVSU won ten of the first 13 points to start the final set up 10-3. NDC would show some fight by taking eight of the following nine points to pull within one point, 12-11. In the end, the Yellow Jackets were too strong, as they prevailed 25-16.
On offense, ten Falcons recorded a kill in a well-balanced attack that saw
Brittany Miller,
Kelsie Palmer and
Kaye Dregalla lead with four kills apiece.
McKenzie Andrix and
Jayme Zoeckler gave it their all when setting up the Falcon attack. Andrix posted a team-high 12 assists and Zoeckler added nine.
On defense,
Amelia Kaeberlein was a bright spot with 23 digs to lead the match. Eight other Falcons would aid Kaeberlein with digs as the Falcons totaled 53 as a team. At the net,
Carli Derda and Miller recorded two blocks apiece and were the only two Falcons to swat the Yellow Jacket attack.
In total, Notre Dame generated 26 kills on 127 total attacks (.047 hit percentage). The Falcons also had 25 assists, five service aces, 53 digs and two blocks. In comparison, West Virginia State would total 45 kills on 118 total attacks (.297 hit percentage). The Yellow Jackets also had 41 assists, four service aces, 71 digs and 11 blocks.
Notre Dame College will be back in action tomorrow Saturday Oct. 16 when the Falcons face the Golden Eagles of the University of Charleston at 3 p.m. in Charleston, WV.
