Men's basketball takes on Concord to start the MEC Tournament

This Week: Notre Dame College men's basketball enters the Mountain East Conference Tournament as the ninth seed. They will play the eighth seed Concord University on March 4 at 8:15 p.m.

Looking Ahead: If the Falcons win, they will advance to play No. 1 seed West Liberty University on March 6, at 6 p.m. That would be a rematch of last season's MEC Championship game.

Records: Notre Dame holds an overall record of 9-19, overall, with an MEC record of 7-15. Concord has a record of 11-17 and an 8-14 MEC record.

Coaches Corner: Mark Richmond is in his first season as head coach at NDC. Todd May is in his fourth season as head coach of CU. He holds a record of 59-57, overall, and has guided his teams to a 41-45 record in MEC play.

Rankings: Neither of these teams are ranked in the NABC poll.

Series History: Notre Dame holds a record of 8-7 against Concord since the MEC began in the 2013-14 campaign. This season, the two teams split their regular season matchups as both teams won on their home floor.

Noting the Falcons: Notre Dame enters the Mountain East Conference Tournament as the ninth seed. The Falcons will look to the four players on the roster who played in last year's tournament, which resulted in the first MEC Championship in program history. Larenz Thurman and Bruce Hodges III were named to the All-Tournament team in 2019. This season, seven of NDC's nine wins have been by double-digits, which includes a 90-73 win on January 29, over Concord University. The Falcons have shot the ball well this season as they are fourth in the Mountain East Conference in field goal percentage at 47.5-percent and they have shot over 50-percent in 10 games. After missing last season, Levi Frankland has led the team in scoring (17.3), total points (485), three point percentage (.432), total steals (26) and he is 29th in NCAA DII in minutes per game (36.4). Deanthony Owens was named All-MEC Second Team this season after scoring 16.5 points per game, pulling down 6.2 rebounds per contest, with 0.68 blocks per game in his first season with NDC. Drew Scarberry has been solid this season, scoring 15.9 points per game with 5.6 rebounds per game. He moved into second place in program history with 312 career threes and is eighth in scoring with 1,416 points.

Noting the Mountain Lions: Concord had an impressive February, posting a record of 6-4 in the final month of the season. Their offense shoots the ball at 44.8-percent, which ranks 10th in the MEC and they score 77 points per game, which is eighth in the MEC. The Mountain Lions do shoot the three ball well, averaging 36.4-percent, good for third in the conference. They have four players who score in double-digits, but none of them average 14 points. Malik Johnson leads the team with 13.5 points scored. Trey Brisco scores 12.6 points per game, ranks seventh in the MEC with 3.68 assists per game and is ninth in the MEC shooting 76-percent from the free throw line. He also ranks eighth in the conference with an assist to turnover ration of 1.61.
