Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

NDC’s tough break prevents comeback in Urbana

URBANA, Ohio – Basketball can be a game of inches sometimes. On Saturday, Notre Dame College fell to Urbana University, 66-65, when a last second shot was called off because it had not completely left Deanthony Owens' fingers when the buzzer sounded.

Urbana started the game by putting the first nine points on the scoreboard. The Blue Knights made their first seven shots and led 18-9 with 14:52 to go in the first half.

With just over seven minutes to play before halftime, the Falcons were down by 11 points. Owens made a layup after receiving a pass from Drew Scarberry. Urbana missed a shot on their next possession and then Levi Frankland knocked down a three pointer on the other end. Frankland then stole the ball and Jordan Burton was fouled and made both of his free throws. With 5:57 on the clock, Notre Dame was behind by just four points, 27-23.

Urbana responded with a 6-0 run, after back-to-back threes by Tehree Horn and Shaunn Monroe. The Blue Knights led 39-31 at the break.

For NDC, Bruce Hodges III scored 10 points on 71-percent shooting in the first 20 minutes. Urbana finished the first half shooting 53-percent from the field and 50-percent from three-point range. Monroe led the way with 14 points and three 3-pointers made.

Through the first 10 minutes of the second half, NDC cut the score to four points, but could not tie or take the lead. That all changed with about eight minutes to go in the game. Scarberry knocked down a three with 8:08 on the clock to cut the deficit to three points, 54-51. He took another three-point attempt on the next possession and did not make the shot, but Daniel Lott grabbed the offensive board. That led to a foul call and Owens going to the free throw line and knocking down two shots.

Urbana grabbed two offensive rebounds and had three chances on their offensive end of the court. However, they did not score and Notre Dame took advantage. On a second chance opportunity, Scarberry grabbed the offensive rebound and made a layup, giving NDC their first lead of the game, 55-54, with 6:29 remaining.

The lead would go right back to UU for the next four minutes. The Falcons tied the game at 64 with two free throws and with 50-seconds on the clock, Owens was fouled while shooting a three pointer. Owens made one of the free throws.

Urbana's Tayler McNeal was also fouled behind the three-point line and knocked down two of three free throws, giving the home team a 66-65 lead with 17 seconds left.

In an attempt to take the win with the final shot, NDC had a couple open looks, but they did not put the ball in the hoop. Owens grabbed an offensive rebound and went back up for a layup, but it was determined he still had the ball in his hands when the clock struck zero.

Frankland (12) and Scarberry (10) combined for 22 points in the second half. Frankland finished the game with 20 points on 54-percent shooting. Scarberry had 16 points and eight rebounds and Hodges had 13 points on 50-percent shooting.

Urbana shot just 35-percent in the second half. Monroe totaled 19 points and seven assists while Horn had 18 points and six rebounds.

Notre Dame is the No. 9 seed in the MEC Tournament and will play Concord University, on March 4. The game is scheduled to begin at 8:15 p.m.
